They all work with today's F6, which also uses the same i-TTL CLS system as the DSLRs; this line refers to the traditional TTL mode of all other Nikon TTL flash cameras made since the 1980s.

As of November 2011 the SB-900 was replaced by the SB-910 which is technically very similar to the older model. There only are minor changes like the push button on the battery lid, semi-transparent function buttons, redesigned soft case, different accessories and re-adjusted thermal cut off circuit to prevent premature shutdowns. Regarding power level, looks, inner mechanics and PCB design both units are identical. All SB-900 and SB-910 units are made in Japan. SB-900 is a larger professional model released 30 June 2008, weighs approximately 415g. It is a flash made by Nikon for their digital and film single-lens reflex cameras, released on June 30, 2008. It has electronic interfaces for through-the-lens (TTL) automatic exposure and automatic zoom to match lens focal lengths from 17 to 200mm (35mm equivalent) and 12 to 200mm in Nikon DX Format. Personally, I prefer the tiny Nikon SB-400 since I want a small flash for use as fill-flash, and velcro my own gels over the flash as needed. Nikon's competitors like Canon and Ricoh use the similar name Speedlite for their flashes. Both names indicate that strobe flashes produce much shorter and more intense bursts of light than earlier photographic lighting systems, such as flashbulbs, or continuous lamps used in some studio situations.

The SB-900 is part of Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS) and features the intelligent-TTL (i-TTL) exposure mode. With compatible SLR cameras (such as the D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70s, D80, D5000, D90, D200, D300, D700, D7000, D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs, D3, D3x and F6) can be used as master commander as well as remote flash unit within a CLS wireless lighting setup. This is a half-stop less than advertised, which ia actually quite impressive, as all previous Japanese flashes have measured a full stop less than advertised, so the SB-910 actually has a half-stop more power than I expected.

Lots of little touches that are a modest step forward. Faster recycling, better swivel, dedicated gel holder that impacts white balance correctly, the list of little things that were added or improved is quite long. Speedlight is the brand name used by Nikon Corporation for their photographic flash units, used since the company's introduction of strobe flashes in the 1960s. Nikon's standalone Speedlights (those not built into the company's cameras) have the SB- prefix as part of their model designation. What we Love...

i-TTL only (no D-TTL as in the SB-600 for use with D1 series, D100 or 35mm cameras other than the F6). with AA Lithium, but only that much if you give the SB-910 as much as two minutes to recycle at the end! Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.

Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements andoptically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect theimagery. After some preliminary use, I don't think there's any doubt: get an SB-900 if you're heavy into flash (and retire your SB-800 to dedicated remote wireless use). Things that are new or changed over the SB-800: The Nikon SB-500 is a lightweight and very compact shoe-mount flash unit with coverage for a 24mm lens on an FX camera or a 16mm lens on DX camera and combined with 100 lux LED for video light, powered by only two AA-size batteries. SB-500 is a very capable flash with a variable angle 'bounce' head (up to 90°) and rotates 180° for soft lighting effects. The flash is part of Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS) with two-group/two-channel control and features the intelligent-TTL (i-TTL) exposure mode. [1] SB-600 (discontinued) [ edit ] The button controls have changed from previous Nikon designs, and ironically, instead of a traditional Nikon direction pad we now have a Canon-style control wheel. But you won't care, the new design is much, much better than before.Some strange cost cutting. Plastic 1/4" tripod mount? No multiple cabled TTL or TTL modes for film bodies? No D-TTL? No dedicated head style switch? Styled light. The ability to control the concentration of light is exceptionally useful. Indeed, it makes you want even more control. No Film TTL. Most of the old film TTL subtleties are missing, as well. There is no provision for the various balanced fill-flash modes that were the herald of film TTL. The zoom automatically adjusts to your lens, and smarter than earlier flashes, also adjusts for FX or DX. Getting a bit bulky. In every dimension the new flash is a bit bigger. Make more room in your case.
