Her memoir, How To Fail: Everything I’ve Ever Learned From Things Going Wrong is a Sunday Times top 5 bestseller and has been described as ‘life-changing’ by critics. But in adulthood she slowly realised that it was often to the detriment of her own boundaries and mental health. In India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, people reported having three times the number of best friends as those in Australia, Europe and the US.

The second half of Friendaholic descends into women's-magazine-style puff (some people say social media makes them feel lonely, while others find it a useful way to keep in touch! Her latest book is How to Fail, a chronicle of the life-lessons of failure based on her hit podcast. She briefly pokes fun at the bromance, and goes on to say that the decrease in military participation has robbed men of the ability to have close physical relationships with other men.

In general I'm ok with saying you have more than one best friend but Day has made it quite clear she only has one and that she's super special. So I said I wouldn't criticise the book for not being what I wanted it to be but then I went and did that anyway. Sinto que estamos finalmente a perceber que nem todo o amor é romântico e que as relações platónicas tem um peso igual ou maior na nossa vida. It is a reflection of her connection to her friends, a compilation of studies of relationships throughout history.

My only real problem with this book (other than the fact that I didn’t think it was possible for a person to have THIS many friends), is the amount of tangents and metaphors packed into each chapter. I’m quite sure that i’m not the only one who has felt the discomfort of self-recognition in its pages, and it’s Day’s skill at delivering those moments of necessary disquiet that make this book feel as though it were written personally for each one of us, like a secret, shared journal in whose pages all our social inadequacies and fears are laid out and then examined with love and compassion, all the pent-up poison extracted and a soothing salve applied. There are sprinklings of unconnected “Friendship Tapes” from individuals about what friendship means to them that break up each chapter beautifully. In summary, you’ll end up wanting to be Elizabeth’s friend, but also being okay with the fact that that’s not going to happen.I related to it so much and believe if every adult read this, we could all be experiencing more honest, deeper connections. Then, when a global pandemic hit in 2020, she was one of many who were forced to reassess what friendship really meant to them – with the crisis came a dawning her truest friends were not always the ones she had been spending most time with. I love delving into the discussion of any sort of relationships, so this definitely ticked that box! Friendaholic: Confessions of a Friendship Addict tells the story of one woman's journey to understand why she's addicted to friendship. Elizabeth approaches everything she does with such thoughtfulness - I love her podcast and other books - and this is no exception.
