A downside to the variable max aperture is that, by definition, the widest max apertures cannot be used over the entire focal length range. This system is virtually silent (inaudible in sound recorded in-camera during video capture) and the image framing does not jump around at startup or shutdown.

In this case, the cost of the quality filter to cost of the lens ratio is high enough for me to give pause to the recommendation. Attaching/removing this lens hood is not especially easy since the bayonet mount requires a twisting action to seat it into place or remove it. It would be great if canon would make a small light lens like this but step it up a bit with a little better build quality and non rotating front ring.

I was extremely pleased with the lens and so glad I chose canon as the platform to capture the colours and textures of a wedding day. however the camera is capable of relatively high ISO and combined with a tripod and longer exposure decent pictures can be made. Manual adjustments can be made in single focus mode once the lens has locked onto a target by keeping the shutter button depressed and turning the focus ring. The light weight and compact dimensions of the lens make this an ideal companion for compact entry-level SLRs.

The K-50 and this lens (and the DA L 50-200) are my first DSLR and lenses, so I had nothing to judge my results against. Tightly cropped head shots will start showing perspective distortion - including big noses - and are are best avoided. The manual focus ring is not very smooth, but the much bigger problem is that there is a lot of play in the extending portion of the lens.

Portraits taken from a close distance will start to show a bit of perspective distortion (including big noses) and are best avoided. Until this lens was announced, name-included changes were the addition of image stabilization (IS) and the immediate predecessor lens received the "STM" designation, indicating that it featured Canon's Stepping Motor-driven AF. I've previously tried my friend's EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM and I'm amazed that this lens can do almost the same speed as that USM on a L lens that is about 8 times more expensive, though it is quite noisy.IS II is a high-quality, standard zoom lens that will appeal to photographers who prefer to travel light.
