Description

The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself. Good design makes a product useful. A group of friends who have worked on advertising projects together in the past, including Vodafone and News International, the team were inspired by the idea of virtual reality. "We began to wonder if such an immersive experience as VR could help people with dementia to remember parts of their lives – and if the experience might help trigger conversations with their loved ones and carers," reveals Cole.

Graphic designer Aaron Draplin follows a personal practice called “ Free Fridays”, where he offers his skills for free each week to a cause that needs help. What all designers have in common is that they aim to mentally “surround” a problem: to observe, discover, and explore it from every angle they can think of. Keep it honest and upfront. Users want promises kept, not false hopes dangled before them, so your design should only be as innovative, powerful and/or valuable as it claims to be. When you consider the solution/s it offers to what problems and design for those, you can help maintain this balance. With that in mind, however, when using these tools, it is important to consider accessibility from outside of your own community. These days good charities need to view themselves more as businesses with a social objective. They need to generate income that they invest into the cause as well as building their brands and growing their people, says Hubbard. "Part of that investment in their brands is paying their partners, and although we might work at a reduced fee, we generally don’t work pro bono.” Former US President John F. Kennedy once said, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” In 2021, we’re calling on ourselves here at Designlab — and on all the designers out there — to embody this idea through their work.

In the “ Build Your Portfolio Project: Redesign,” you’ll find a series of fun exercises that build upon one another and cover the visual design topics discussed. If you want to complete these optional exercises, you will get hands-on experience with the methods you learn and in the process you’ll create a case study for your portfolio which you can show your future employer or freelance customers. Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user. Good design is environmentally friendly.

Creative studios of all sizes can make an effort to include charity work in their remit, and those that do it well are quite vocal about it. Commercial agencies All new solutions will be made available to the impacted communities on an open-source, license-free basis to maximise impact. The most promising initiatives will be given additional funding and support to scale their benefit further. Things that are developed using a design for good ethos, too, have people at the center-not a business, government department, or other abstract entity.

The least possible is the best possible. When you focus on just the essential aspects in your design, you can make the best of their purity. For example, the clean feel of a UI with well-defined, simple buttons is a winning “formula” compared with the clutter of options users would experience if you inserted every nice-to-have feature. The primary focus of its brief was to deliver a more engaging user experience; making the design and visual elements of the app more appealing to its teenage target audience so that they would feel comfortable using it," explains HMA’s managing director Nicola Tiffany.Let’s show our support by joining their movement and transforming the way we think about our periods. Positive change can only be brought about if a cause is clear, compelling and motivates participation, concludes Hubbard. "Good communication is at the heart of that change, so for us getting involved in projects where we can use our skills to further a cause we believe in is both rewarding and important." The Innovation Auction is your gateway to join hands with Design for Good, super-talented designers, and a global network of development organisations and alliance partners. Together, we would like to refine this innovative solution through your unique insights and carry it forward into implementation. At their core, designers are problem solvers. And while we’re arguably living in the most empathetic time in history, as a world we still have an urgent need for creative solutions to some big problems.
