Description

Four pairs of bolts in varying lengths are provided for the rear caliper, to suit a range of chainstay depths - a nice touch, some brands make you purchase these separately. The GT hybrid hydraulic disc brakes offer the stopping power and modulation of hydraulic disc brakes, but are cable-actuated, which means they are compatible with your existing rim brake shifters and groupset. Hydraulic pistons are actuated by a normal brake cable - so you can keep your existing rim brake shifters. These brakes were put through their paces on some of the most gruelling descents you would every try to ride a cross bike down.

On the other hand, there’s a lot more metal in there than the old Hope calipers by the looks of it which might keep them cool. The F1/M1 is the latest addition to the Juin Tech stable, sold as a set including mounting bolts, adaptors and rotors. But power follows a nice linear path and – especially if you're braking from the drops – can stop you very quickly, though you never feel in danger of going over the bars.

The GT-F are compatible with Shimano and SRAM too though, and I can imagine would be an attractive proposition for anyone looking to port their high-end Di2 or eTAP groupset to a new disc brake frame. Fitted them this week but still to ride them but they pass the garage track stand test with flying colours. Nor did I notice any major brake fade: we've not had the opportunity to ride them on proper mountains, but they laughed at all the wet, mud and grit I could throw at them over the past five months with little-to-no reduction in stopping power. You may wish to use a tracked service for peace of mind, but do bear in mind that we can only accept responsibility once they arrive back to us. The R1 act exactly like the normal hydraulic brakes, ie with double pistons, but the command is given by the cable.

I've ridden Campagnolo's (excellent) full hydraulic brakes extensively, and would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Roads, bridleways, canal paths, deep muddy puddles – all these conditions and more were thrown at them, along with some aggressive riding, and the R1s haven't put a foot wrong yet.

In the nice green box you get the two calipers, a pair of 160mm discs, pair of adapter mounts and the mounting bolts for everything. They are a little wooden feeling with my old style Tiagra levers, felt better when I tried them with new 105 though.

Mine felt spongey, I had to really dig in the levers to get my wheel to lock up and modulation was non-existent. Whilst most countries do have reasonably high thresholds before charging these fees, it is worth mentioning, and is sadly not something we can do anything about. They aren't able to tell you when it's going to be delivered but you can watch things unfold on the carrier's tracking page.

Give that it is a budget bike it was never going to make sense up dating to full hydros so the alternative seemed to be TRP HY/RD, however people seem to have mixed views on how well these run, so I was never 100% keen on these. Please contact us if you require a faster service as we can upgrade to fast courier service for an additional fee.

The feel at the levers is excellent; good initial bite, and plenty of modulation when you need to feather the brakes on a long descent. I managed to get it spot on using some thin bits of cardboard stuffed up between the rotor and pad’s with brake on while i tightened each bolt a little at a time, as on my frame the caliper wanted to pull over to one side as i tightened the bolts. They came completely disassembled so had to put the whole thing together and fill and bleed the cables. However the GT's with Sram levers have more than enough power to do the job - the difference in performance between the two systems, though significant, is not huge.In the box, you get a set of brake calipers in a choice of bling anodized finishes: JuinTech sent us the red. Uncompromising performance, ease-of-use, and great looks to boot - the Juin Tech GT-F brakes tick all the boxes. It was very helpful that the package came with a set of rotors, so this is a way to save some money if that's what you're into. Performance wise, i didn't really have anything to compare them too aside from my other bike which are fully mechanical disc brakes.
