The episode opens with a nighttime shot looking over Los Angeles (set to the strains of some 1980s hair metal) before it cuts to Miguel's grandmother cooking dinner for the family. She calls to Miguel in his room, but mistakes the sounds of his karate practice as masturbation. Over dinner, the family discusses what Miguel's costume should be for the school's Halloween dance. Miguel suggests Deadpool, but notes that the costume is expensive. Johnny was once the troubled rich kid of the Valley who started a feud with the new kid Daniel LaRusso, which went on for over thirty-years. His vicious training in martial arts by John Kreese made him a formidable opponent, and he was the top student at the Cobra Kai dojo. After losing the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Johnny's life turned upside down and remained that way into his adulthood, and he became the estranged father of Robby Keene. The thematic genesis for Cobra Kai began with a few works of pop culture. First, the 2007 music video for the song " Sweep the Leg" by No More Kings stars William Zabka (who also directed the video) as a caricature of himself as Johnny, and features references to The Karate Kid, including cameo appearances by Zabka's former Karate Kid co-stars. Motivated by his success with Miguel, Johnny creates a new martial arts dojo called Eagle Fang, composed of Miguel and several other students that Kreese has expelled from Cobra Kai, including Mitch and Bert. Johnny also reconnects with Ali briefly for the Christmas holidays and finally gets closure with her and ends his rivalry with Daniel, while Miguel does the same thing at the students' level by rekindling his romance with Sam and negotiating an alliance between the students of Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang. Johnny was devastated when his father left, and desperately tried to hold onto the memory of the man, in spite of his mother's attempts to dissuade Johnny. Laura remarried to the much older, wealthier, yet still abusive, Sid Weinberg. Sid's toxicity, sexism, anger issues, belittlement of both Johnny and Laura, and his disregard for politeness made an impact on Johnny. The teen carried many of these traits into his adulthood as well. With another abusive figure in his life, Johnny's self-confidence depleted. When he found Cobra Kai Dojo, he saw students who were strong, independent, and brave; he longed to be one of them. Daniel: I'm just scared. You know, the tournament and everything... One day in 2017, Johnny receives a phone call from one of his friends. He then goes to the hospital, where he meets Bobby, Jimmy and Tommy, with the latter being placed on hospice care. Dutch is the only one not present as he is in prison, but is mentioned and given a toast by the others. Johnny, Jimmy and Bobby take Tommy out of the hospital for the day, and the four hangout. Later that night, Tommy and Johnny have a conversation, where Tommy suggests to Johnny that he should use his good health and time to find another women or make ends with Ali.
