Just believing that life works that way is the sign of inadequacy. I don’t claim I know how life works. I surely know what doesn’t work. The “bratty-workaholic” model of life is definitely deficient. No, you can’t have “all you want” just because “you work hard and put your mind to it”. James is most definitely not a life coach. The irony of the title is not lost. The writing style is painful, hard to read and full of repetitive phrases. The content too, is just awful, embarrassing almost, it makes me wonder who pushed it to publication. Coaches utilise techniques to help their clients in all aspects of life. If you've ever struggled with something - whether it be moving out of your comfort zone, improving your confidence or starting healthy habits, then consulting a life coach could help you. A coach may be hugely unhappy in her family life, but stay in complete denial and throw a “happy couple” show because coaches are supposed to have happy relationships. You'll work with your coach for a period of a few months or longer. The time frame depends on how often you meet and what you're hoping to accomplish.

During their training, life-coaches become illusional not just about solving their own issues, but about becoming something exceptional, superior to “ordinary people”. “Leaders”, “enlightened beings”, etc. You have troubles selling your service, because, let’s be honest, most people don’t have a reason to trust you. They sense the drama behind the glitter. And you charge too much. Then finally we have the appearance factor. We all know about the peculiar obsession with how much we weigh and look. You know what James is talking about when someone flirts with you, asks you out or even hears a murmur that someone finds you attractive.

In 1995, the nonprofit International Coaching Federation (ICF), an independent credentialing body, attempted to impose a set of standards and a code of ethics on the industry, and met with middling success. Although tens of thousands of coaches belong to the ICF, many more – including Castillo, who has dismissed the ICF as clubby and ineffective – do not. Instead, she opted to create her own certification program via the Life Coach School, which she founded with her husband, Chris, in 2007. Initially, LCS trainings took place largely in person. A couple dozen students would gather at the Holiday Inn Express in El Dorado Hills, California, where they spent a week learning Castillo’s signature product, the CTFAR Model: all circumstances (C) are neutral; your thoughts (T) create your feelings (F), which inspire your actions (A), which lead to your results (R). Course materials promised CTFAR “can literally solve any problem”. There’s nothing more fulfilling in our career than witnessing the personal change our clients go through and seeing them thrive in their new life. But there are situations when we can’t see what’s going on, on the other side. Time commitment: The most in-depth programs will require a time commitment similar to an associate degree program. If you’re working full-time and only beginning to consider a career in life coaching, you may want to consider self-paced courses.

You decide to take life-coaching as a profession because you need help with your own crisis in the first place.
