With John Amplas, Roy Frumkes, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, Tom Dubensky, Tony Buba, Taso Stavrakis and a whole host of zombies and bikers!

From what I can gather, this cut omits much of the relationship drama and comedy elements (though surprisingly keeps the infamous pie scene) and amps up the bleak tone. The absence of a wider colour range an Picture: Be assured, Dawn of the Dead has never looked this good before on home media, although unsurprisingly it's the Theatrical and Cannes cuts that shine brightest, by virtue of a restoration of the original camera negative and HDR (with HDR10+) grading. Since much of this cut is based on the Theatrical restoration, much the same can be said here, rich colouring, well detailed and defiant blacks. Whether you’re in it for its social commentary, its zombie carnage, or its characters, Dawn of the Dead is a film that’s easy to enjoy and stands up better than many of its counterparts.

Combining this with the new black level, which is rich and deep with magnificent shadow depth, and highlights in the white scale that pop the image out, and you have a picture that is stunning. Throw in a superb, deep black level – when the source material allows it – and you have a first-rate 4K HDR transfer. A whole host of extra features spread over all the discs in the set, with almost all the previous released material and an all new set to explore. I used to feel Dawn of the Dead was a little overlong, dragging its feet more than Night, but I didn’t get that sense at all this time around.Inside the package is a 156-page hardcover book entitled Dawn of the Dead: Dissecting the Dead featuring rare photos, posters, and artwork; Dawn of the Dead: Over and Over by Chris Alexander; A Real-Life Nightmare by Tony Williams; Romero’s New American Gothic by Kat Ellinger; Superschlock! dba Freestar (“Freestar”) for the purposes of placing certain advertising on the site, and Freestar will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes.

Dawn of the Dead, sensibly, sees Romero take a very different approach to the zombie movie than its predecessor. Killing Time at the Mall: The Special Effects of Dawn of the Dead (HD, 25:36) – An interview with special makeup effects artists David Anderson and Heather Langenkamp Anderson. Sarah Polley (Splice), Jake Weber (Wendigo), Mekhi Phifer (Divergent) and Ty Burrell (Modern Family). The 4K disc just handles the grain better (a cleaner and more nuanced look to the structure) and the fine details are superb.

Some of us missed out on Second Sight's big limited edition set, but this standalone 4K release of their gorgeous DAWN OF THE DEAD restoration is every bit as fantastic. In 2004’s remake, the mall is a convenience, providing great coffee, plasma TVs, beds, and tools with which the survivors can defend themselves. The whole film ends with a wonderful, sweet story about how Romero kept the legend of Father Christmas alive for his kids. This too has been remastered and graded for high dynamic range (both HDR10 and HDR10+ are available here).
