Connecting the Helon Taylor Trail to the Knife Edge Trail, Pamola Peak is a great spot for taking a break on a nice day. Right off the bat, we made an error in route finding that would haunt us for the rest of the morning. We began to traverse across the ridge but got hung up for a brief moment where the trail seemed to disappear. We pondered our options for a few minutes, but chose the path we had seen a climbing team take in front of us. This trail meant we would continue with class III-IV climbing for most of the morning, which was slow but lots of fun. No one has spoken to the parents of the child who is brain-dead about organ donation. If they do and the parents agree to it, it will tie up the bed for at least 24 hours and the baby who needs her heart valves replaced will likely die. Should the doctor talk to the parents about organ donation or use the bed to save the dying baby? So basically this book was the next one in my medical literature chronicles spree, and I was finally reading about a heart surgeon, which I had anticipated with lots of excitement.

Sorry you didn’t get to make the whole trip, but glad it was due to things out of your control rather than something bad happening to one of you. Will’s pictures are incredible, his photographs look like professional pics 🙂 A moral and practical conundrum. A little baby is dying but would fully recover if her heart valves were replaced. There is no bed for her. A child is brought in with a crushed skull and brain dead and will not be ventilated so there will be a bed for the baby whose operation has been put off twice already. The traverse across Knife Edge is relatively tough and requires focus and agility. Some spots are as narrow as four feet, with 2,000-foot drops on either side. Proper equipment, weather preparedness, and good decision-making are necessities. You are SO right re: managing your fear. The route truly isn’t technically hard if you’ve been in this game for a bit, but it can be tough to talk yourself off the ledge. If you can’t do that, you shouldn’t bother crossing because who knows what will happen if you freak out mid-crossing, you know? When you come visit, maybe we’ll find a comparable adventure! The Knife's Edge did open my eyes to the broken system, a system I haven't had to use really in the past 10+ years and so I'm grateful for the insight, however some education about what we could do as a reader or some insight into what's being done to turn the system around. He retired at the age of 68.

Stephen Westaby describes what all qualities a Good Surgeon should possess in multiple parts in this book. The beauty of Katahdin does, of course, make it a very popular destination. If you’re hiking for the day and not staying at the park overnight, there are multiple trailheads at which to park and begin the hike, all of which require online reservations (parking areas are capped at a certain number of vehicles). Maine residents can reserve a spot anytime after April 1; nonresidents up to two weeks before the hike. Each reservation must be presented at the entrance gate on the morning of your hike. Reservations are held until only 7 a.m., so plan on arriving early and waiting in a line of cars during peak season. There's so much things happened behind closed door that we didn't know or will never know unless it is told. Same goes to the operation theatre. And the NHS itself. So many political, money thingy and selfishness involved that stained the quality of the healthcare workers there.

His stories as a failed good father, fears when he himself becomes a patient and the anger at the limitation of the NHS as a health provider are interesting to read. Y’all, I can definitely understand why people freak out crossing the ridge— the exposure is insane! I am needing a good push- myself- out- of -my -comfort- zone adventure. I am hoping that the next couple of weeks plans will produce that. Bummer about not making it to the summit, but at least you experienced what everyone had been talking about. You make it look easy.
