The usual Gravity torture test (Sandra Bullock floating off into the darkness of space surrounded in stars) catches it out with lots of star crushing present, but we didn’t expect it to pass that test anyway.

You’ll find universal HDR support here, matching Panasonic TVs in the inclusion of Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG (hybrid log gamma). This cookie is a performance cookie used for internal Bazaarvoice web analytics, to be correlated to the same user for interactions within a particular client domain.

On the A7G, this mode is Cinema Night with all unnecessary processing switched off manually and gamma set to 2. We were unable to test the VRR capabilities at the time of the review, but all the other features do work. This larger display allows for a greater level of detail and visual impact, enhancing your enjoyment of movies, TV shows, and sports. The clean, precise, defined nature of gaming graphics suits the screen’s knack for detailing and sharpness, too, while motion remains decently clean even in the processing-light game mode. During setup, we were even presented with a prompt to watch Netflix, making it abundantly clear that the dominant TV streaming service had paid a premium to maintain pride of place on 2020 Hisense TVs.

There’s an option of a few audio modes with Theatre the most expansive (and best suited to films): Speech smooths out dialogue while Sports sounds big and impactful.

With 20W of audio power from the speakers, the sound from the Hisense A7G is really loud, I only kept it on about 25% volume for the majority of the time I spent with it. It quickly becomes apparent, though, that the black level problems are so fundamental to the 55A7GQ’s image characteristics that nothing in the picture menus really helps.Google Assistant and Alexa are available (the latter via the Remote Now app) alongside the option of VIDAA Voice, which appears to be the OS’ bespoke digital assistant.

There are other screen sizes available from 55-, 65- and 75-inches and these larger sizes all use an IPS panel, the 50-inch we are reviewing has a VA style 60Hz (8bit+FRC) panel. The idea is that every TV should have at least one picture preset which can display TV and film content as it was mastered and intended to be seen. As always, for purists, we would recommend disabling the Ultra Smooth Motion settings for film and drama content, but there are user settings for use with video content and sports if you feel you need those. There are a few small issues with too much green at various stimulus points as well as a lack of red at certain points.

Out of the box, SDR image quality in the Cinema Night mode did look accurate to the eye with decent natural-looking colours and lifelike skin tones. Care should be taken if you are going to experiment with these settings for sports viewing and so on. We also love the Private Listening mode on the app interface; press that and the TV’s sound is routed through your device.
