Since they are such early spring growers, it’s best to cut down peonies in the fall after hard frost has killed the foliage. This also helps prevent pests and disease. Simply cut the plant all the way down to the ground. Getting into the habit of adding your peony plant supports before your plant even start to grow will make it much easier to keep the flowers from flopping every spring. I have often used these tomato cages upside down as obelisks in the garden to support things like sweet peas.

No assembly required — You don’t have to worry about fiddling with spanners or screws. Your peony cage will arrive as a solid piece of raw or plastic-coated steel.

Their big blooms come in pink, white, and red, with newer hybrids expanding color options to yellow, purple, mahogany, and more. Flower forms Some are pricier than others. Gardeners Supply has some that are just beautiful but way out of my budget. I have about eight plants around my yard, all providing various shades of pink flowers in the spring. They don’t all bloom at the same time, so when they’re in season, I get to enjoy freshly cut peonies in vases for a few weeks. However, if I just paid a little more attention in the early spring, I’d also get to enjoy them in the garden for longer. Peony blooms are heavy. Without some type of support system, they’ll open and then all it takes is one heavy spring rain or especially gusty day and they flop over. Peony rag dolls

The best peony support rings have a grid for a reason. If this did not have the grid they would just lean all around the peony ring instead of holding up their blooms. However, it can be difficult to eradicate, and removing the plant is often the best solution. Since it is a soil-born disease, don’t plant another peony in the same spot as it will likely end up with the same problem.

To help prevent the fungus from surviving the winter on old leaves, a good fall clean up is important. Remove any fallen foliage and other plant debris around the peony. Then throw all of it into the garbage (not the compost pile) to avoid contaminating other parts of your garden. I’ll share with you what peony supports are popular with gardeners and, my personal favourite, peony chairs! If your peony bush is too large to use grow through plant supports, then you can create a DIY peony cage using plant stakes and ties.Stakes might be made from a range of different materials, from bamboo to natural branches from your garden, to reclaimed lengths of wood, metal or other materials. You might also consider creating rings or lines of stakes around a clump, or several peony clumps, with natural twine or other strings between them. 2) Plant Support Hoops No Assembly Required Small = Height 60cm, Top Ring Diameter 50cm & Lower Ring Diameter 30cm Large = Height 60cm, Top Ring Diameter 60cm & Lower Ring Diameter 40cm

Step 1: Position a plant stake a few inches away from the rootball, then use your hammer or rubber mallet to drive the it into the ground. However, after their first year you can stop with weekly watering as they are drought tolerant plants. Herbaceous peonies usually require some kind of support, while intersectional and shrub-like tree peonies can often manage without it.

About Peony Support Cage

Once you’ve planted your flower, now it’s time to care for it! Learn how to grow peonies that thrive with these simple tips. Water Peonies tend to be dramatic, flopping over just as they reach their peak blooms. To stop this from happening, you need to place peony supports before they get too big. It was a heavier gauge wire than other tomato cages but the others could work as well. After some testing, I will let you know how they work. Peonies will very rarely need division and don’t like their roots to be disturbed since they take so long to get accustomed to their home.
