Do you need to use a lot of gain? Something like the EDQ Plumes might be more suitable than a Mooer. Do you want loads of tonal variation? The JHS Bonsai's 9-in-1 qualities make it a versatile beast. Will you be going into a dirty amp? Something like the traditionally-voiced Maxon OD-808 will suit well.

Another thing to consider is whether you'd like a more traditional pedal over something more modern-sounding, or vice versa. While all of these pedals are great, they all have different qualities which make some more suitable than others. Do I want something traditional or modern? Personally I swear by the Klon(e) build by our Juansolo, just like many here do. It also is an overdrive, but one without that mid character. It takes the signal, makes it louder, adds treble and gain, all to taste, without touching the rest. Very tranparent pedal, great sounds and almost all settings are great. It is THE more pedal. Gives you more of all the good stuff. It really has that mojo to me.

The OD808X takes Maxon’s classic 808 circuit to the extreme; adding extra Drive, Level and High frequencies to create a versatile, amp-like overdrive with excellent note clarity that won’t get lost in a mix. TECH TALK: Amazingly, the OD808X does not add much noise at high-gain levels, making it an ideal booster for heavy styles dependent on chunky stop/start power chords. Careful with used units, the ones featuring the JRC 2043DD chip don't sound very good (according to Analog Man) What I do know however is that there is a world of difference in tone between the newly-issued JRC4558D chip and the Toshiba model as used in the TS-9 reissue. If you currently own a TS-9 reissue and even if you don’t necessarily want to convert it to TS-808 specifications, do yourself a favor and at least get a new-issue JRC4558D chip in there to hear a nice improvement. The OD808 sounded as it should with its proper JRC4558D chip and I’m happy to report that fans of the 808 sound will be very pleased with the sonic results of the OD808.
