Description

he story begins with Leo witnessing another boy strangle himself in an empty playground and ends with him wandering around a campsite, haunted by guilt and fear, and distracted by his desire for a girl named Luce.

During a sleepless night, Leonard wanders to the beach where he witnesses a tragedy and does nothing to intervene. This story packs a punch in just a small amount of pages ( just over a 100) it’s a dark tale of a 17 year old boy who finds a boy hanging (still alive) and chooses not to save him but to watch him die, then to bury him and carry on his holiday as normal! But it was still very readable and in the end it's won a lot of awards and I'm not really sure I understood it.

Il secondo richiamo è quello che avvicina questa opera prima di Victor Jestin a tutti i romanzi (francesi) dedicati all’adolescenza tormentata, da Sagan a Radiguet. The story just focuses on the day after what happened, the last day on the campsite for Leo and his family.

I loved the writing, which is spare but highly evocative, and I admired the way that the author used the enclosed world of the campsite to fuel the claustrophobic tension that mounts throughout. This may sound strange in relation to a story whose foul deed takes place at the beach and is committed by a teenager. While wandering on the dunes he sees Oscar, one of the cool kids, hanging from his neck, entangled by the rope of a swing. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. While his peers are celebrating in record heat, drinking, Léonard stumbles alone and tired through the last hours of his summer vacation on the French campsite. It's a tale very skilful at instilling contradictory feelings of empathy and rejection for the young boy who is guilty without actually being guilty but who locks himself in an unbearable dead end while life at the campsite continues in its banality and ordinary trivialities. It focuses on characters making strange and momentous decisions that the reader would normally have no hope of understanding or empathising with. Filled with adolescent hormones and days filled with lust, will he be found out, suspected or confess?
