It was a single line, the first line in the book in fact. I'd had it for ages but didn't know where I was going to use it until the character of Edgar came along: "I suspect I may have fleas again".

The idea behind this post apocalyptic world was fascinating and it wasn't too preachy seeing as it is a possible eventuality of global warming. This is essential reading for it paints a vivid picture of what life may well be like in the not too distant future if we don’t do something NOW about global warming. Rest assured though it’s not a rant about that but the author brilliantly interweaves our possible future into an utterly compelling story. Set in a world that has suffered from the Ice caps melting, we are taken on a journey that looks at what the world might be like if everywhere flooded. It reminded me of zombie apocalypse films where humanity either turns on each other or works together... I fell in love with this story. Based in a post apocalyptic world (the future of the world if global warming keeps happening) it approaches many themes. The doom that prevails is beautifully crafted as is the glimmer of hope that pulls us through the book with its magnetism. A middle-grade short novel about a post-global-warming world in which much of what was England is now under water. Ten-year-old Zoe and her parents struggle to survive in Norwich, now an island, until the last supply ship is set to take them away. But Zoe gets separated from her parents and misses the boat. Months later she finds a small boat and sets out to try to find them.

The main idea of the book which is global warming, gives the children a perspective about how the future would be if humans keep on neglecting the environmental issues. I enjoyed listening to the children's interesting discussions about how we can reduce the effects by changing our behavior. It was a long way from there to the finished book but that was the start of it.The most important thing is to know your market! Who do you think your book is going to be read by? What else is out there that's like it? Are you writing something that will sell? The language in the book is simple to read but very descriptive, using lots of metaphors and personification. The belief that she will one day find her parents spurs Zoe on to a dramatic escape in a story of courage and determination that is handled with warmth and humanity. I write at the weekends, and mostly in the study in my loft, but also sometimes I travel to write - eg much of Revolver was written on trips to Sweden.

This book takes a look at one of the possible futures in our path if we continue on the destructive route humans are currently on. Floodland is an interesting story about a young girl called Zoe who lives on a deserted island, Norwich. Norwich is deserted because of high sea levels. Reading this during the coronavirus pandemic, there are a lot of parallels: fear, concern for the future and one's own survival, who you can trust or be close to. Put this together with the feral survival of the children on the Island of Eels and you have Floodland.

Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments saw Marcus turn his attention to books for younger readers with the launch of a humorous new series: The Raven Mysteries, narrated by a grumpy raven, Edgar. Yes, I always loved myths and legends - I used to read and re-read two books from the library - one a big illustrated edition of Greek Myths and the other Old Peter's Russian Tales. I don't know why I was fascinated by these stories, but maybe simply because I find them to be more glamorous than contemporary stories... I started to write as a teenager a bit, but properly when I was in my mid-twenties. It took a few years to think it might actually happen! Great question, impossible to answer. So many amazing things to go and see – the building of the pyramids, a Viking boat putting out to sea, Man Utd winning the European Championship in 1968…Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - Zoe as a character was fleshed out enough to get a sense of her goals and motivations but I didn't really identify with her. Other characters were also fleshed out and I found some of the side characters interesting. Marcus began to write seriously in 1994. His first book, Floodland, was published by Orion in 2000, and won the Branford-Boase award for best debut children's novel. Witch Hill followed in 2001, and was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award.
