However, normally, if you intended to publish your notebook you would lay it out in readable format. This book was somewhat a throwback to my childhood which was spent happily exploring the countryside, building dens and having adventures. What to build now, where to go next, what to pack to go further and how to tackle a new environment are well within its capability to see a child through years and years of exploring. It covers how to make a forest shelter, read a topographical map, and which foliage makes the best bedding. THE LOST BOOK OF ADVENTURE – REVIEW – The AOI THE LOST BOOK OF ADVENTURE – REVIEW – The AOI

Expert instructions on wilderness basics, like building a fire, what to do if you get lost, and how to build various types of shelters are accompanied by more specific skills culled from many years of experience, like baking campfire bread, creating a toothbrush from a twig, making a suture from soldier ants and even how to pan for gold. This book could help with their new adventures it is packed with information on wild camping, rafting, exploration, and shelters and dens, plus tips on first aid and tying knots. You'll be transported by riveting adventure tales from around the globe, like being dragged off by a hyena in Botswana, surviving a Saharan dust storm, being woken by an intrepid emperor penguin in Antarctica, and coming face-to-face with a venomous bushmaster (one of the most dangerous snakes on the planet)--all told in lyrical prose and illustrations that wonder at the mysterious beauty of the wild. You don’t need to be in a far-off place to start an expedition of course, and the book makes clear that back gardens, parks and canals are all suitable locations for adventuring. When it is safe to do so we will undoubtably all head for the mountains and forests to reconnect with nature. The very nature of finding an 'unknown' adventurer's notebook is strangely very appealing and tempting. The note from the editor at the beginning of the book, as to how the book came to be made me fall in love before I went any further. Not only is the book beautiful it is very informative with instructions on pitching tents, campfire cooking, foraging for food, reading maps and building shelters and rafts.

The Lost Book of Adventure definitely contains a little something for everyone with an adventurous imagination! A facsimile edition of the tattered notebooks of the Unknown Adventurer, this love letter to the wild details everything you need to know about how to live and thrive in nature, from the principles. For anyone who cares about getting themselves and their children out in the wild, read this and understand what it means to live with your senses alive. You’ll be transported by riveting adventure tales from around the globe, like being dragged off by a hyena in Botswana, surviving a Saharan dust storm, being woken by an intrepid emperor penguin in Antarctica and coming face-to-face with a venomous bushmaster (one of the most dangerous snakes on the planet) – all told in lyrical prose and illustrations that wonder at the mysterious beauty of the wild.It starts at the basics with how and what to pack for an adventure and describes in beautiful, intricate pictures nature experiences and beauty. I know where to put the boom, how many bottles will carry my weight, which side of the river to travel up, and which watercraft has right of way. An anthology to inspire and help children understand how far self-belief and guts took adventurers from the past - and to wonder how far these qualities could take them too. And would-be explorers might enjoy the anecdotes about being dragged by the leg by a hyena, or eating maggots from a pig's carcass. Skilful drawings show deserts, rapids, canals, forests, mountains, jungles, islands, oceans and the equipment for surviving in them, with tips on how to construct shelters or rafts, or improvise an oar.

Thanks to Quarto Publishing/Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

He cycles 6,000 miles through Africa, sketches birds in Papua, and confronts a bushmaster in Guyana. The perfect book for any young explorer, and a great book for grownups to share with the small adventurers in their lives. It contains the most comprehensive guidance, in the form of lists, instructions, diagrams, facts, knowledge, techniques, advice, remedies and warnings. The sketchbooks are attributed to an “Unknown Adventurer” who appears to have created a guide to adventuring for two young relatives, hoping to inspire them to explore hidden places around the globe.

I now feel completely capable of lashing together salvaged pallets to make a raft - with a mainsail, daggerboard, and hand-hewn paddles. It's a combination of practical advice - fire making, tent placement, responsible camping - and artistic advice - the value and beauty of experiencing true nature rather than sanitized camping. It's exactly like opening up an adventurer's notebook: seeing all their beautiful watercolor sketches and handwritten details of their adventures, with little notes and reminders written just for you.
