Description

On this walk and talk I take the Garmin GPSMAP 65s along a section of St Oswald's Way from Warkworth, on the Northumberland coast to Rothbury. As an entry level model, it’s easy to outstrip the Garmin eTrex 10 GPS – its eTrex siblings feature colour screens, more storage and helpful additions like an altimeter, in the case of the Garmin eTrex 32x. Equally, for more professional-level users the Garmin GPSMAP 65 range offers serious firepower for only a little more bulk. However, bear in mind that you’re more than doubling and then trebling the price of the little Garmin eTrex 10 to step up to those two examples respectively, so very much a case of horses for courses. Garmin eTrex 10 GPS review: verdict Climbing The Dodd and then Puncherton Hill in the Cheviot Hills, looking at the elevation data on the Garmin Epix (Gen2) - 05:11 In this walk and talk I take a Garmin Instinct GPS watch on a walk around Kielder Reservoir, Northumberland. In this walk and talk I am joined by two special guests, Amon and Antony from the Bullitt Group, who created the Motorola Defy satellite link.

The 10 is superb in that it keeps you tied to the map and compass but offers what i think is the utter goldmine of info on a hill - grid ref within 3m In this latest walk and talk we take the Garmin GPSMAP 66sr for a walk along the Northumberland Coast Path. We look at how to use a Garmin inReach mini2 to navigate with and also how to send messages from a Garmin inReach mini2. You’ll now see a numeric keypad and navigation arrows. Use the keypad to enter the coordinates from your map. If you don’t need to change a particular digit, use the left and right arrows to navigate past it. In this walk and talk I head out in the South Downs with the Zoleo, a super easy to use two-way satellite communicator.

Out of the box, the eTrex 10 units default to kilometres. I tend to leave this setting as-is. All the maps in my collection use km as the unit of measure. Look on the right hand side of the chassis and you’ll see the power button. Press and hold for 3 seconds to see the boot screen. To change these settings, first collect the datum information from your map. In the UK, we use Ordnance Survey GB (OS GB). During my travels abroad I use UTM UPS. Another useful tool is the differential compass, which updates fast enough for walking and hiking navigation, but can be a bit on the laggy side for trail running jaunts. With sections for speed, ETA, distance and time to the next waypoint, this is where you’ll spend most of your Garmin eTrex 10 GPS screen time. Marking waypoints is relatively straightforward, although the keyboard can be slightly faffy. Added support for advanced geocache logging with OpenCaching.com. See TrailTech (http://garmin.blogs.com/softwareupdates/2011/08/advanced-geocache-logging-with-opencachingcom.html) for more information.

I can’t emphasise enough the importance of getting this configuration right. Incorrect configuration will result in inaccurate map readings. Do you want to get lost in the dark on the moors? What is a GPS waypoint? It’s a marker you create as part of a route, or as a reference point on your journey.
