Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Rosalyn Drexler are some of the American artists associated with the history of Pop art. He patterned his work off of mass media like advertising and comic books to help convey his messages.

The show’s basic assumption was that its heroic protagonist was “a simple-minded ass,” while his “stooge,” Robin the Boy Wonder, was “insufferable,” “dumb,” and even “odious. Stretching is usually done in preparation for framing the painting, that is, sliding the stretched painting into a wooden frame. Starting with a sketch, the artist adds all the details and colors, layer by layer, following the original brushstroke style. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle.

Artists in the United Kingdom started the Pop art movement as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period's consumerism. Just as Superman, an interplanetary immigrant invented by two Jewish teenagers at the height of worldwide anti-Semitism, has been envisioned as a crypto-Jew (by Feiffer among others), so Batman was imagined as having a second secret identity. The Certificate of Authenticity which arrives with every painting provides an assurance and verifies the authenticity of the hand painted fine art reproduction you purchased.

It opened with footage of the recently closed, Pop-identified New York World’s Fair and featured Batman (Adam West) dancing the “Batusi” at an Upper East Side disco. The bright colors and graphic patterns and imagery of Pop art continue to influence fashion, prompting the industry’s designers to integrate provocative color pairings and visuals commonly associated with mass media and advertising into their garments.

Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture. Certainly, the show’s key element—namely, the use of well-known personalities (Liberace, Tallulah Bankhead, Otto Preminger) submitting themselves to a regimen of ridicule by dressing up to play preposterous villains—is suggestive of Factory Screen Tests. W. Griffith actor Neil Hamilton’s Commissioner Gordon provides the show’s most consistently brain-dead characterization, producer William Dozier himself supplied mock-self-important voice-over introductions and closers (“Tune in tomorrow, same Bat time, same Bat channel”). The packaging was exceptional with 4 layers of bubble wrap and 2-3 layers of fortified cardboard – I could have jumped onto it and nothing would have happened.

Miller accomplished the task in part by bringing Batman out of retirement into a lawless, nearly anarchic Gotham City and by eliminating the Boy Wonder—or, rather, drafting a thirteen-year-old girl as the new Robin. It is characterized by using images as objects of popular culture or everyday life, obtained from the media. The various entanglements are barely risqué, but the mood is giddy; the scene ends as Smith dances the twist with Beverly Grant atop a mock operating table. Although not published until 1964, the story was written three years earlier, around the time that Barthelme became director of Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum and Warhol, one of the canniest analysts of American mass culture since Kurtzman and his colleagues, intervened in the Batman saga. I try to paint a new classic Batman piece every year, and each project is well thought-out, planned for a long time, and worked on for months! In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way. Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. The signature of the Author and the manufacturer's logo in the screen images is set as a "watermark".
