Kondolojy, Amanda (April 11, 2014). "Syfy Gives Straight-to-Series Greenlight to 'The Expanse' ". TV By The Numbers. Archived from the original on December 20, 2016 . Retrieved February 26, 2014. The Sol System: A Sourcebook for The Expanse RPG is an upcoming reference book expected to release on September 12, 2023. Exploration really only covers the rules for getting hurt outside of combat but does have a subsection entitled "Investigations". I came very close to liking this small slice or rules. It lays out a method for providing the characters with leads and clues some (most) require a test, a dice roll to get past the lead and find the clue. The author warns us against using a path that leads to a dead end. Good advice too, except if progress relies on a dice throw, a failed test is a dead end unless the GM wants to fiddle with rules. D'oh!

The central characters are the crew of the Rocinante, a salvaged Martian naval gunship. The main crew consists of: Cara Bisset, a ten-year-old child who, with her parents, settled on Laconia. Cara died and was resurrected by the planet's repair drones. The core rulebook starts off with a short story by Corey, ‘The Last Flight of the Cassandra’, which is used as a hook to draw the players into the premise, and what a premise it is. For those of you unfamiliar with Corey’s works, the discovery of a new form of propulsion, the Epstein Drive, opens up our solar system for exploration (and exploitation). The Expanse Roleplaying Game brings James S.A. Corey’s award-winning series of science fiction novels to the tabletop. Using the Adventure Game Engine (AGE) rules that power Green Ronin’s Fantasy AGE, Blue Rose, and Modern AGE RPGs, The Expanse takes players to a far-future solar system where humanity is divided: Martians, Belters, and the people of old Earth struggle for political power and resources, but older, alien, forces are stirring in the universe, and human history is about to take an unexpected new turn. Following on from non-combat encounters we have Interludes. An interlude is what happens between adventures or dying in-game downtime such as a long space flight, you get to rest, repair, heal and work on things of importance to your character. Good. The novels are written in third-person limited. Each chapter is told from the point of view of a character central to the story, while the prologue and epilogue are told by a recurring character or a one-off viewpoint. Most of the books employ four point-of-view characters (plus the prologue and epilogue viewpoints). Leviathan Wakes features two, Babylon's Ashes features sixteen, Persepolis Rising features eight, and Tiamat's Wrath features five. James Holden is the only character to be used as a viewpoint character in all nine novels.

Centered on an ancient alien station, it connects to over a thousand other portals to a thousand different star systems. Each contains one or more worlds shaped by the ancient aliens who created the protomolecule. These aliens intended to do the same thing to Earth. The Expanse was a roleplaying campaign before it was a series of novels. Good, huh? Reduces the chance of the creators not getting what roleplaying is. Google Books - Sol System: a Sourcebook for the Expanse RPG by Kate Baker, Christine Beard, Keith Garrett, Steve Kenson, Ian Lemke, Brian McDaniel, Jason Mical, Pete Woodworth; Green Ronin Publishing, Feb 28, 2023 There are things I don't like of course but they are not deal breakers: Stunts, there are just too many but you don't need to use them or maybe you could introduce a few at a time so the players and GM can digest them in small bites. The "rules first and roleplaying second" approach is totally unwanted in a roleplaying game but easy to ignore. Finally, as usual, this review is my opinion only; if I say something is great of poor it doesn't mean that it actually is.A second series was also published by Boom and written by James S.A. Corey and Corinna Bechko, and illustrated by Alejandro Aragon, Francesco Segala and Ed Dukeshire. To date 4 issues have been published. The authors have suggested that The Expanse might well take place in the future of Andy Weir's novel The Martian. [21] In support of this, they created a ship named the Mark Watney after the titular Martian. However, Andy Weir has publicly clarified that the reference was solely a fun reference. [22] Those who have watched the crew of the Rocinante, alongside compatriots Drummer, Draper and Avasarala, finish their adventure will probably be left with a lot of emotions and ideas that could be channeled into a tabletop campaign. The official Expanse RPG has been positively reviewed and warmly received by fans, but it’s the obvious answer. In the spirit of broadening horizons, here are eight more tabletop RPGs to scratch that spacefaring itch for those brave enough to travel through the rings. This roleplaying game takes place during the events of the first two books, Leviathan Wakes and Caliban’s War. It uses the AGE (Adventure Game Engine) system, and this was my first experience of it. If you've made it this far, you deserve a medal and I'm sure you've concluded that I don't like this game. Not so; there is much to enjoy here:
