Sato is widely consumed by the locals, particularly during celebrations. The drink is usually served at room temperature in large bowls. And guests are invited to scoop it up themselves, making it a social and communal drink. However, despite its widespread popularity, Sato remains a liqueur that is produced on a small scale, mainly due to its short shelf life. Chang Beer PHOTO: Unsplash

While you can make a version of Thai iced coffee very similar to the method of making Nom Yem with instant coffee, a true Thai iced coffee uses Oliang. Oliang is Thailand’s very own version of coffee, made from a blend of the robusta species of ground coffee beans, brown sugar , seeds and spices such as cardamom , sesame seeds , soy beans , cinnamon , rice , corn and more! This blend creates a coffee with a unique smoky aroma and taste. Making this coffee from scratch is a labour of love, especially when that’s just one step to making Thai iced coffee. Fortunately, Cofe Oliang has a pre-made Thai coffee syrup blend ready to use in an instant! Because, you aren’t using fresh cow’s milk, you need to increase the amount of condensed milk and evaporated milk you use. You don’t need too much more just enough so that it makes the drink milky and not watery in flavor.

Sala Syrup Taste

If you prefer a non-dairy version of Nom Yen, you can use almond or oat milk as a substitute for whole milk.

If you do freeze don’t fill the bottles all the way to the top, leave some room for expansion. Make a big batch for serving at gatherings This eye-catching Thai drink is not only visually appealing with the perfect shade of pink, and its sweet and creamy taste is incredibly satisfying, especially on a hot day. What is sala syrup? Sala syrup is a red liquid with a bright red hue that is derived from the salacca palm fruit of South East Asia. Sala syrup is made from artificial ingredients and tastes very sweet, just like strawberry, but with a stronger floral aroma. It is as sweet as sugar, but there is no doubt about it. Do You Refrigerate Sala Syrup? There are different flavors and colors of Hale's blue boy syrups. Those flavors include Mali (Jasmine), Creme soda, pineapple, rose, grape, strawberry, cantaloupe, and sarsaparilla. They all have different colors matching the taste of the fruits used. I haven't had most of them, as Nom Yen is the most popular. Thai iced milk tea is probably one of the most well known and popular iced beverages from Thailand and with good reason. This drink is creamy, deliciously spiced in true Thai nature and of course wonderfully cooling. Much like Thai coffee, with all the right ingredients you can definitely make this from scratch but an easier way to treat your Thai iced milk tea cravings would be to use an authentic ready made blend like Cha Tra Mue’s Thai Tea Mix .The drink. If you have leftover pink drinks from a big batch, put them in an ice cube tray for the next round of drinks. Add some milk and let the ice cubes thaw, and enjoy! In Washington DC, a mother-daughter duo that run Thai Chef Street Food, have a fancier interpretation of nom yen on their menu. It’s called the “Unicorn Nom Yen” and has the traditional Hale’s sala base mixed with milk, but boasts a crown of whipped cream and colorful sprinkles on top. “It was definitely my favorite drink as a kid and that’s why I serve Unicorn Nom Yen at our restaurant,” explained Chalisa Fitts, one half of Thai Chef Street Food, who inherited her mom’s love of Hale’s Blue Boy. Making Thai pink milk is ridiculously easy.As with many other Thai drinks, Thai pink milk is better with ice, especially crushed ice. So I suggest you prepare some ice too. You can make crushed ice using a blender or food processor. If you want to crush it the Thai way, you can put some ice in a bag and smash it with a pestle!

Nom Yen is a popular iced drink from Thailand (more commonly known as Thai Pink Milk). This beverage gets its blush pink colour from the famous Thai sala syrup from popular brands such as Hale’s Blue Boy . Thai pink milk can be likened to being a version of strawberry milk/milkshake but with a more ‘grown up’ sweet and more floral taste. It’s super easy to make, deliciously creamy and a great refreshing drink to cool down. Image above. Our many flavors of Cha Yen (cold tea) from my Thailand trip this last April. These cold drinks are excellent for cooling off in the Thai humidity! Why You'll Love Thai Pink Milk Sweetened condensed milk. Optional. If you have a sweet tooth, add up to 1 tablespoon but know that sala syrup is very sweet. If all you have is condensed milk and or evaporated milk you can still make a tasty drink. All you need to do is increase the amounts of condensed milk and evaporated milk. Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities. Ingredients Notes Delicious pops of fresh strawberries! For REAL strawberry flavors, a little crunch and slight tang to balance out the sweetness! Calorie Sala Syrup: I used Lin brand 0 calorie sala syrup here which I found in Bangkok during my last trip. Sala syrup is an artificial sweetener which is meant to imitate the flavor of the sala (also known as salacca) fruit. It tastes similar to strawberry syrup but is sweeter and more fragrant. If it’s not easily available to you, use a zero calorie or zero sugar strawberry syrup (I like Walden Farms’ strawberry syrup). You can also just use regular sala syrup or strawberry syrup if you prefer.
