The only vacuums that could fall into “quiet” category would be robot vacuums. Robot vacuums tend to be around 10 dB quieter than traditional corded upright vacuums. I would also suggest you consider a HEPA air purifier. A purifier can make a big difference for allergies…think of it like a vacuum for your air. The vacuum removes dust on the ground, the air purifier removes dust in the air. I've been using this vacuum daily since purchasing it in February and I'm still just as impressed as I was in the beginning. Cleaning it has been so easy. The only thing that bothers me in regards to cleaning it is you're unable to detach the rolling brush to clean it properly. You're still able to wipe it off but since it doesn't come out it makes it impossible to clean the plastic cover which gets caked with dirt. When it comes to raw cleaning power on carpets the Shark vacuums tend to lag behind the Dyson V15, V11, and V12. However, not by a huge margin. We don’t have pets but we do have kids, our apartment has low pile carpet (light beige, because we are masochists!) everywhere but in the kitchen and the bathrooms. I have a Dyson DC40 -yes, it is 11 years old- and while still works, it has lost suction power or it is just fed-up of cleaning after my kids. I just read your entire review and the following Q/A section. Would you recommend the Dyson Ball Animal 2 for our family, base on suction power? Struggles a bit more with medium and large size debris, when cleaning hardwood floors. Dyson’s newer V10, V12, and V15 do much better on hard surface flooring. I cannot think of any upright vacuums that meet your performance / usability requirements, while also being lightweight. They just don’t exist. Any of those 3 would be more than sufficient, and a major upgrade over the Shark Professional you were using.Between the Shark Vertex Duo and V10 I’d go with the Vertex. However, between Vertex and V11 I’d go V11. So how do you choose between Shark vs. Dyson? The first question you need to answer, what type of vacuum do you need? You want a full-sized upright with a gigantic dust bin? The Dyson Ball Animal 2has 2.1 L dust bin and the Dyson Ball Animal 3 has a 1.7 L dust bin. The first test mess we tasked the Pet Pro with cleaning up was rice grains. This product did exceptionally well, crushing this cleaning challenge and collecting all the rice. It didn't have any problems with flinging grains to the side, though we had to go just a bit slower to keep the vacuum from bogging down than some models with a powered front brush roll.
