READ NEXT: These are the best robot vacuum cleaners to buy today Hoover H-Upright 300 review: Should I buy it? Next up is gaps in the air flow. This hose is in pretty good condition, but over time the plastic can degrade and rub against parts of the machine and you can end up with something looking like this. Now this is a pretty extreme example, but even the smallest of holes can cause a loss of suction. I was particularly fond of the collection bin on this model. It releases easily and emptying it is a simple job: a latch opens the door at the bottom and most dirt and dust simply drops out. On the brush bar is a manual slider: keep it closed for more suction on hard floors; or open to make the cleaner easier to push on carpet.

Approaching the mess from different angles and giving the H-Upright 300 a few more sweeps soon collected most of the mess, with just the crevice tool needed for the tiny particles remaining right at the edge. Unfortunately, this vacuum cleaner does not feature a dust container full indicator or a storage compartment. However, its durable construction and reliable performance make it a suitable choice for households or small businesses in need of an efficient and effective cleaning solution. There’s a tendency for vacuum cleaner manufacturers to make ever more expensive and complicated cleaners. The Hoover H-Upright 300 offers a tonic to that formula: it’s a cheaper, lighter upright cleaner that gets all of the basics right. The Hoover H-Upright 300 HU300RHM is a vacuum cleaner designed for dry cleaning. It has a powerful maximum input power of 850 W, making it capable of efficiently cleaning dust and debris. The vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter that helps to trap even the smallest particles of dust and other allergens, making it a great choice for homes with allergy sufferers.Cleaning performance is also determined by the tools included with a cleaner. Lower suction power can often be negated with the use of decent tools that agitate dirt. To test this out, I ran my normal cleaning tests. For added convenience, the HU300RHM comes equipped with a flexible hose with a length of 2 meters, allowing for easy maneuverability and access to hard-to-reach areas. The crevice tool further enhances its versatility, enabling efficient cleaning in tight spaces. Safety First! Please make sure your appliance is switched off before beginning any maintenance work. The Hoover H-Upright 300 is a fairly basic model, with a single rotating brush in its floor head. You can switch this on and off, depending on the surface you’re cleaning; Hoover recommends you switch it off when cleaning floors and deep pile rugs. There’s a power button on top of the dust bin, plus a button next to it that disables the motorised brush bar. That’s good to see, since cleaning hard floors and deep-pile carpet can be difficult with the brush spinning.

To start with, I put the Hoover H-Upright 300 through my raw power tests, measuring its suction in AirWatts. I recorded a score of 185.9AW, which is lower than many other plug-in cleaners, which usually come in around 200+. However, in context, this cleaner is still more powerful than most cordless models on their maximum setting. With a noise level of 80 dB, the H-Upright 300 HU300RHM is moderately loud but not excessively noisy. There is no dust container full indicator or storage compartment, but the vacuum cleaner is relatively lightweight and easy to store away after use. Take it from me, as a veteran vacuum cleaner unboxer, that some are a tad time-consuming. Lots of parts wrapped in plastic and assembly instructions with pictures only. This vacuum, on the other hand, only needed its handle slotting in and the two attachments to be put in their place on the machine and it was ready to go. Tools on board and therefore always to hand is great, and also scoring points from me is the fact that the instructions have clear words as well as drawings. And much as I like cordless machines, being able to plug in and start rather than wait for a battery to charge has a lot to be said for it. A more difficult test is my carpet tile test, where I sprinkle flour right up to the skirting board. With the H-Upright 300 set to hard floor mode, it left a trace amount of dust behind, as you can see from the images below. To use the hose and attachments, you have to disconnect the hose from the floor head. This is easily unclipped and then also needs to be freed from a retaining clip. Attachments connect on to the end of the hose or, if you want extra reach, you can release the handle from the main body and use it as an extension. The Hoover H-Upright 300 HU300RHM is a vacuum cleaner designed for dry cleaning purposes. With a maximum input power of 850 W, it provides sufficient power for effective cleaning. Additionally, this vacuum cleaner features a HEPA air filter, ensuring that the air expelled from the cleaner is free from dust and allergens for a cleaner and healthier environment. I also struggled with moving the vacuum from hard floor onto rugs or door mats. The front of the device is quite low to the ground and it struggled with even small changes in elevation, crumpling and pushing away the rug rather than climbing up the edge. The collection bin has a generous 1.5-litre capacity and is easily released from the chassis for emptying. It also contains the filters, which are washable in water and rated to the HEPA H13 standard. Lastly, if you've tried all of the above and you're still experiencing a loss of suction, it's probably due to the motor. Now you can replace the motor, it's not the easiest of jobs but it's certainly doable and you may find that you don't need to replace the whole motor, just the carbon brushes in the motor.

It isn’t a particularly long wand, although I still had just enough reach to get to the top of the rafters in my test lab.

To complicate matters slightly, there’s also a suction regulator. This is a slider that either covers or opens a grille on the top of the floor head, which helps reduce the amount of suction. This is useful if you find the head is hard to move on long-pile carpet or rugs. If yours is a home with lots of carpet or has a 50/50 type of split between that and hard flooring, and you share your space with small or large pets, it’s a yes. This is a solidly built and good looking upright that’s thoughtfully designed for ease of use and convenience. Both I and the cats would have preferred a little less noise in action ideally, but it’s a value for money choice for all fans of upright vacuums and those looking for the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair. About this review, and our reviewer Undo the 2 screws found at the rear next to the wheels using a standard Phillips screwdriver. On some models it will be necessary to remove 4 screws fitted as shown by the blue arrows below I didn’t really want to attempt a conversation when I was vacuuming with the Hoover Upright 300 Pets, and I especially didn’t want to when I was using the motorised mini turbo brush – the pet hair tool. Bear this in mind if your animal housemates are sensitive to loud noise. The Hoover is reasonably light for a corded model, weighing just 4.94kg. This is lighter than its similarly priced competitors, with the Shark DuoClean with Lift-Away NV702UK weighing 5.25kg and the Dyson Small Ball Allergy a hefty 6.9kg. It’s easier to carry around but isn’t small, standing at over a metre tall (1,147 x 300 x 320mm). The mains cord is 8.1m long and there’s a built-in hose for connecting the attachments to, which stretches to 2m.
