Description

It is as fluffy as floating on cloud while lying on a mattress stuffed with kittens and simultaneously wearing a pink angora jumper and a candy floss hat.

It's an examination of our evolution and our degradation, a glimpse of small town, Southern, American life. . . where every type of person, every type of relationship, every problem, is fairly represented. Meanwhile, in present day, Mrs Threadgoode urges Evelyn to live her life to the fullest. Just because she has entered middle age does not mean that her life is over. Written during the 1980s era of the working woman, Evelyn is coached on to get a new lease on life, a new career, and enjoy the second half of her time on this earth. In an interview following the novel, Fannie Flagg points out that she prefers older characters because they have many layers to their lives and much advice to offer to younger generations. It is in this mind set that she made Mrs Threadgoode the central point of her novel. During the 1970s, Flagg was a fixture on game show panels. She is best known for her appearances on the game show Match Game (normally occupying the lower right-hand seat next to regular panelist Richard Dawson). [13] Her stage acting credits include the short-lived 1978 Broadway play Patio/Porch [14] and the original 1978 Broadway production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (succeeding Carlin Glynn). She appeared in the films Five Easy Pieces (1970), Some of My Best Friends Are... (1971), Stay Hungry (1976), Grease (1978), and Crazy in Alabama (1999). So, what are the ways? What is it that gets us through the night? Through the bad marriage? Poor health? The death of a child? A pandemic?Stump recounts the stories of his guardians to his daughter and granddaughter. Big George's sons, Jasper and Artis, take independent paths: Jasper as a Pullman porter and Artis as a gambler and lady's man. After the decline of Whistle Stop, Idgie and her brother Julian relocated to Florida, where they operated a roadside food stand. Flagg, Fannie (September 1, 2016). The primary focus of the novel is on Buddy Threadgoode, Jr, the son of Ruth and her estranged, then later missing husband, Frank Bennett. I didn’t remember the strange legal fact that the Threadgoode family adopted Buddy before he was a year old. Even with his missing arm, Buddy has a successful career and a loving wife and daughter. They end up living up north but still keep in touch with Idgie, who moved to Florida. Later in life, Buddy and his daughter, Ruthie, are befriended by Evelyn Couch. Evelyn’s life certainly took a positive spin after meeting Ninny Threadgoode at the nursing home. Learning about Towanda, along with Idgie and Ruth’s friendship, was a lasting godsend for Evelyn.

Mrs. Threadgoode tells Evelyn stories from a not-so-distant past, when racism was rampart and certain home values were taken utterly seriously. She tells of larger-than-life Idgie, sweet and gentle Ruth, and of course a whole cast of truly unforgettable characters. You never know what's in a person's heart until they're tested, do you?Her stories give Evelyn a new outlook on life - suddenly, she's not the mousy, dissatisfied middle-aged wife - she's got spunk. She's got character. And she'd be damned if she let one more person walk all over her. Face it girls. I'm older and I have more insurance. Gah. It's one of those books that just sweeps you off your feet and holds a special place in your heart forever. It's fluffy, but the kind of fluff that has you squealing with happiness and chasing someone down to let them know how great this book is. What do Dot Weems’ weekly dispatches tell us about the nature of life in a small town? Were you sorry to see Whistle Stop fade away? Why has this been the fate of so many small towns in America? One word of caution though, this story isn’t all ‘Beer and Skittles’, there are certainly elements of racism, violence and domestic violence that come through – making this story all the more realistic. Ninny could talk underwater with a mouth full of marbles, this – as we all know – can be a little wearing, but it seemed to me this is exactly what Evelyn needed. It was a joy to see their friendship grow. The last section of this book was one of the most moving things I have read in recent times. I read it slowly. life can be hard sometimes. And I sort of think animals are little gifts the good Lord sends to help us get through it.”

There are so many characters and time periods here, all jumbled up and interspersed with small-town newspaper articles. Evelyn is going through menopause and just realizing that despite doing everything she was supposed to do to be a "good girl," life hasn't turned out the way she wanted it. She's just found her anger, and now she wants to burn the world down. Ninny is in a care home and is regaling Evelyn with those stories of the Whistle-Stop Cafe. Evelyn finds comfort in her company. Well this was disappointing. I think Flagg was hoping to capture some of the magic from the first book but it felt very flat here. I think the issue was that we had too many characters to follow in this one (Buddy Jr, Ruthie, Eleanor, etc.) and we didn't get enough time with them. I had hoped we would get a different look at Buddy Jr. as a kid and growing up in Whistle Stop, but he felt like he was making cameo appearances in the end. And I have to say that the ending was 100 percent unrealistic. I think that Flagg wanted to leave readers happy with what may come next, but I kept going, yeah this is so unreal I can't even enjoy the book anymore.Flagg and Carol Sobieski wrote the screenplay for adaptation of the novel as a film, Fried Green Tomatoes, released in 1991. It is directed by Jon Avnet and stars Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson. The film adaptation is a story within a story of Southern female friendship and love. [12] Zganjar, Leslie (November 3, 2002). "The Whistle Stop name is just too popular". Birmingham Business Journal . Retrieved December 28, 2009. Stops are made along the way, and you see the town’s demise as the years pass, as people pass. Through Dot’s newsletters you find out that Idgie Threadgoode closed down the Whistle Stop Café in the mid-60’s, and ‘retires’ to Florida near her brother Julian, Buddy marries, becomes a veterinarian, becomes a father, and then and eventually a grandfather. Meanwhile, Whistle Stop slowly becomes a town forgotten by the world, but remembered by the few who lived, and loved, their lives there. When she woke this morning, Evelyn realised that she was actually looking forward to going to the nursing home. Sitting there all these weeks listening to stories about the café and Whistle Stop had become more of a reality than her own life…..

I expected this to be more about Bud, but it seemed that it was about everybody, even though it did tell readers about what happened to Bud through the years after he left Whistle Stop. The writing was pretty scattered I thought. I think if we had followed things in a linear fashion it may have worked better. But going from the 1930s, to 1980, to 1990, to 2000 whatever was a lot. You also have to pay close attention so you can see when people you have followed from the first book have died and passed away. I just felt so annoyed by the whole thing after a while. a b Park, Irby (May 7, 2003). "Fannie Flagg Captivates Audience at City Book Event". The Chattanoogan. What did Ninny Threadgoode’s stories offer Evelyn? Why do you think Evelyn is so drawn to this woman and her stories? The film caused the fried green tomatoes food dish to be known as a delicacy of the Southern United States, when it previously did not have such a status. [20] Box office [ edit ] How does this story explore the process of aging? How do we die with dignity when all those we loved and who loved us are gone? How does Ninny manage? After 5ish minutes the tomatoes with begin to soak up some of the flour mixture. Once this happens dredge the tomatoes through the flour mixture a second time shaking off the excess. This will help the tomatoes get a nice, even crispy outer layer. Petski, Denise (October 14, 2020).
