The latest entry in AMS’s 44 Scotland Street series finds Irene raising her ugly head and wanting Bertie to spend 3 months with her in Aberdeen where she is pursuing her PhD in psychology.

Warm hearted, humorous and wonderfully wise, Love in the Time of Bertie offers philosophical insight as well as sartorial elegance. sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. He also meets a girl who is not impressed by him at all and I almost felt bad for him until I remembered what he did to Stuart. On the floor of the wardrobe was the shoe rack on which Angus kept shoes other than those in regular use. Written with wit and wisdom and containing a gentle, thought-provoking philosophy about life, the ability to change, love, friendship, community, art, admitting one's defects, and taking control.

Another wonderful, charming, thought provoking, entertaining story about my favorite characters living on Scotland Street in Edinburg, Scotland. I always read books from this series so quickly but am always sad when they are over, not least because I'm not sure if there will be another. Regarding preserving hot water bottles when the rubber begins to perish: "You can fix them with a bicycle repair kit" and "we keep our hot water bottles for 30 years.

Stuart, his father, adores his son and is worried about allowing Bertie to live with his out-of-town (and out-of-life) mother for three months.

And, I keep my phone nearby so that I can look up words I've never seen before as well as historical and geographical facts that I either had forgotten or never knew. Ultimately, it falls to Bertie’s best friend, Ranald Braveheart MacPherson, to rescue Bertie, and that involves theft from a safe, a train journey, defenestration and close contact with ewes.

Every book in the series offers an escape from reality, each character is well developed and it’s always like catching up with old friends when you read what antics they’ve been up to. There is astute social observances and deep philosophical musings on a range of topics from the mundane to the deep. Catch up once again with the extended family at No 44, in this the latest instalment in the Scotland Street series. Despite the fact that little happens in the way of plot, this book made me laugh out loud many times, boil with fury and frustration.

Meanwhile, Angus Lordie expresses his appreciation of the bespoke Lobb brogues he inherited from his father, while Domenica comments on Belgian indoor shoes and the fashion for knee-ripped jeans and low-slung trousers that expose underwear. Meanwhile, upstairs at 44 Scotland Street, Bertie's father Stuart is powerless to stop over-bearing Irene and her motion for Bertie to travel to Aberdeen on a three-month secondment. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad.

The English shoes of which he was proudest were a pair of black brogues, made of soft and supple leather, and bought by his father from the London firm of John Lobb. There’s Domenica, whose anthropological training has honed her observations of her neighbors; Matthew, whose growing triplets are more than a handful; Bruce, whose challenge as ever is thinking of anything but himself; and Big Lou, who may just have found her shot at romance.
