Once Carl had recovered from his operation, he complained to the insurer about its handling of the matter. But Leelu is not alone; someone is leaving her gifts outside her house – wonders which give her curious magical powers. Through the help of her friend Betsy, her growing relationship with her brother Tiber, and the 'wonders' that are left by Bo, she grows.

Carl felt it was unfair that his insurer rejected his complaint, arguing that its representative had acted in Carl's best interests. Leelu’s situation – of arriving in London, with her mother and brother, from another country but without her father – was based on a child I used to teach. Mirabelle says “It’s amazed me at how much I can relate to the book with starting a new school in a new place. Fly Me Home is an incredibly moving portrait of one family’s struggle to adjust to life in a new country.

Full of friendship, family and magic, this stunning novel by Polly Ho-Yen, author of Boy in the Tower (shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award) and Where Monsters Lie , is a must-read for 9-12 readers. This resources will encourage and support pupils to explore unknown vocabulary, classify tiered vocabulary independently, explore the wider application of newly acquired vocabulary and enhance classroom vocabulary display which ultimately leads to improved retention. Ho-Yen`s debut Boy in the Tower is one of my favourite books of all time, and Fly Me Home came very close to being just as good. When you look at small pieces of moss, and beautiful leaves so intricate and delicate they ARE things of wonder with hidden magical powers. He asked for help in arranging his flight home but the insurer said that flying was too risky for him.

However, the girl she befriends from next door is like a ray of sunshine into the rest of the dark and sinister book. It reminded me of being a child again, sometimes glimpsing part of an adult world that I couldn’t put together, but mostly being lost in my own struggles and joys. Praise for Boy in the Tower'An unusual and very impressive debut' The Bookseller'I loved it' BookbagPraise for Where Monsters Lie'One of the most unusual and distinctive new voices in children's fiction' The Bookseller Feeling lost and alone in a strange new city, Leelu wishes she could fly away back home her real home where her dad is, thousands of miles away.

The story is an emotional one and there are many opportunities for discussion which may lead onto deeper PSHCE sessions.

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. I absolutely loved reading this book because it was fun it was interesting and I loved it because it was fictional and also factual in places.

Leelu has moved to grey, cold London from her warm home country, with her mum and brother, leaving a much-loved father behind. Having said that, it is incredibly lovely when people like your books (I can never quite believe it! The book is a real mix of the magical realism element and real, contemporary issues, and also touches on immigration and the meaning of home.
