I've bought the Ladybird Read It Yourself series Levels 3 and 4 (lots of easy to read fairy stories) in the hopes that it ignites even a tiny spark of pleasure for DD1.

He sends her home with a book and a note in her reading journal saying 'this looks as if she'll find it a bit difficult', and at some ensuing point over the next fortnight I get round to bossing DD1 into reading it. But then, before then, we had these really boring annoying tiny losable books about Sam and Mat that made me want to throw things, so by comparison Ginn 360 is great. Unfortunately so many parents do not seem to accept this and insist on plowing on through the stages. The most interesting ones we've had are the Literacy Land Info Trail ones here - they have some quite hard words in and they are full of great info. The books are Ginn All Aboard, and i've jsut noticed they mnoved him up to level 5 before Christmas. It's a non-selective school so I've assumed that the distribution of abilities in the class is fairly average.t may sound daft but school struggle to send home apporpraite books for his mental age that he can read. I also think that there is a real need for books that are challenging to read for advanced readers in late primary. NC Level 2b is about ORT Stage 9 - around the Stage when children should be able to start transferring their reading skills to reading short 'real' books fluently.
