When his father does leave, Thom decides to run away from home. When he falls asleep on the bus, he becomes mixed up in a battle between some villains and The League. He also encounters a mysterious man known as Dark Hero, who works alone. Thom ends up using his powers yet again on a young mother, and gets an invitation to try out for one the minor leagues. When he gets home, he discovers that Hal's former mentor Captain Victory has died. He decides not to tell his father about the tryouts, because Hal harbors intense resentment for The League. Thom is accepted as a trainee, and assigned to work with a group of other probationary heroes. The group consists of Ruth, an aging psychic, Scarlett, who can control heat, and Larry, who has the ability to give others any disease. The stress of keeping so many secrets from his father exacts a painful toll.

During a basketball game, Thom recognizes one of the players from the opposing team as Goran. Thom is thrown off his game and Goran ends up breaking one of his legs. Strangely, Thom heals Goran's injury by touching his leg over the compound fracture. He has healed others before, but does not fully understand his ability. Apparently no one notices what he has done for Goran, and when the game resumes, another player calls Thom a faggot in front of everyone. Afterwards, Thom has a seizure, which is most likely related to stress created by absorbing Goran's injuries, and his fears about his father discovering his sexual orientation. While recuperating at the hospital, he is forced to give up his driver's license and must resort to using the bus to get around. Every book needs a hero. We’ve named our top 20 heroes and heroines from literature. From the sleuthing Nancy Drew to the unlikely hero in The Little Prince, there’s a long list of both well-known and atypical heroes and heroines. Who made your list? Tell us in the comments below! The GI Bill is mentioned in the text in regards to the later plans of the veterans, which they discuss in the St Jude Club. Joe LaFontaine speaks about how the government would be willing to pay for his college education and intends to become a teacher. However, the positive outlook is shown to be false, as the veterans are later presented as pessimistic people, especially Arthur Rivier, who struggles to cope with not talking about the war. The Little Prince is so full of wonder and life that we often forget he is just a young boy. He is a hero and saves the narrator, who has crashed his plane in the Sahara desert.

The ramifications of war are explored within the text, arguably with the trauma inflicted upon Nicole & Francis by Larry LaSalle representing the way war pays no regard to its effect on people, especially the young. Joey LeBlanc: Joey and Francis were childhood friends and went to the cinema together. He was a troublesome figure at school as he used to be talkative. He is a confident person and seems to be the antithesis of Francis. He also became a soldier, and is said to have died at Iwo Jima. Moore said he wrote the book after being upset by a Marvel Comic. In the 2005 "Enemy of the State" storyline, the gay character Northstar is killed by Wolverine (while the latter is brainwashed by The Hand). [1] Moore believed that having one of Marvel's biggest superheroes murder its most prominent gay character sent the wrong message to readers. [2] Moore subsequently created a list of 60 LGBTQ superheroes who have met with torture, rape, disembowelment, decapitation, had their genitalia disfigured or removed, or retconned as heterosexual. [3] [4] His growing awareness of the poor treatment of LGBTQ superhero characters led him to write Hero to present a more positive side.Matilda is one of our favorite heroines because she embodies all of us with her passion for books. Plus—she has powers that are pretty awesome. Mrs Belander: Francis's landlady. She feels sympathy towards Francis, as he is a veteran and is the person who inadvertently reveals that Larry LaSalle has returned to Frenchtown. Celie becomes a strong woman after being abused and oppressed throughout The Color Purple. Her new independence inspires us.The smartest witch around, Hermione Granger is constantly saving the day and is a wonderful female role model. BBC Bitesize has a useful set of superhero resources to support teaching a superheroes topic in KS1. a b c Gustines, George Gene (2007-09-03). "A Novelist's Superhero Is Out to Right Wrongs". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved 2023-02-10. Publishers Weekly applauded the book for its subject matter and for expanding the genre of gay literature into superhero fantasy. But ultimately, the review noted, "the novel misses its mark, with an abundance of two-dimensional characters and contrived situations. ... While some may be glad to see a gay hero come out of the closet just in time to save the world, others may wish the situations felt less clichéd." [9] Thom Creed was named #5 on a list of top 10 LGBT Book Characters. [10]
