sounds complex ….but the story flows effortlessly and the dazzling magic that captured our hearts in the first book — does so again in this second book. What’s the plan at this point? Based on the themes of this book, and where it ends, you could plausibly end with The Hidden Palace , or write 20 more books and bring some of these characters into the present day. How are you feeling about continuing this story? A powerful story of love and loss that is utterly captivating. I was drawn deep into the world of Malaya and England in the 1950s in this intense exploration of what it means to love. Beautifully written and wonderfully atmospheric, Dinah Jefferies skilfully captures this fragile moment of history in a complex and thrilling tale. THE SEPARATION is a gripping and intelligent read.' The unique level fade in and out does not exist in the prototype. Instead, the normal level fade in and out is used. Act 2 starts with Sonic being placed inside a transporter much later into the level, rather than the actual start of the level located further up and left.In 1985, the sudden death of Dinah Jefferies’ fourteen year old son brought her life to a standstill. She drew on that experience, and on her own childhood spent in Malaya during the 1950s to write her debut novel, The Separation. The guns piled high on the hall table when the rubber planters came into town for a party, the colour and noise of Chinatown, the houses on stilts, and the lizards that left their tails behind. Thea wants me to come to supper,” she told the Jinni sourly one winter night, as they walked the Mall beneath the snowy elms. “She’s planning, in secret, to invite a neighbor of hers, a man she thinks of as ‘poor lonely Eugene.’ You can guess her motives.” This second book is a dual timeline featuring Florence the youngest sister, and Rosalie, their aunt who left Paris in 1923 for Malta. Have you considered,” he said, “that poor, lonely Eugene might have a clandestine lover of his own?” There was a time when I wouldn’t have cared in the least. Sometimes I wish I still didn’t. [...] I, too used to think I could live in this body, among these people, and not be changed by it. That I could, as they say, swim in the water and not get wet.

It felt to me like pushing a bump on a rug to flatten it down. You know, if you’ve got a rug that doesn’t quite fit in an area, and you’re like, “Okay, so if I put this chair on top of it…” But the bump just gets pushed farther down in the rug. Honestly, a lot of it was just trial and error, moving one thing here and one thing there, then saying, “Okay, now where’s the problem?” It’s not not the best way to write a book. I don’t recommend it! Her entry point to this middle story in her war series was an interest in the time Malta spent as a British Crown Colony, but once her initial research illuminated the intense bombardment of Malta — “3,000 Nazi air raids in just over two years”, she noted — she knew she had to use the “evocative” setting. The plot of The Hidden Palace continues through and beyond the end of the war in Malta, which is one of the novel’s several strengths. As Jefferies notes, “we see the consequences of what happened for ordinary people and in particular women” after the war’s end. You’ve said The Golem and the Jinni took an immense amount of research, just to get down the basics of how people lived in 1899 New York. Was Hidden Palace research-intensive in the same way? Among the ancient honey-coloured walls of the tiny island of Malta, strangers slip into the shadows and anyone can buy a new name. Rosalie Delacroix flees Paris for a dancer’s job in the bohemian clubs deep in its winding streets. We also have a new golem and a new jinn, both of whom are half-formed and not particularly likable characters that add nothing to the story. The other new secondary characters are fine, but nothing special or unique. The Hidden Palace is the 2nd in the Daughters of War trilogy by Dinah Jefferies and was an excellent read. Told by Florence at the end of WW2 and Rosalie from 1923, the depth and intricate detail about Malta and its outstanding beauty, the surrounding beaches, the ruthless and mercenary lives of some - all combined to create an outstanding novel from the hands of a master. I'm very much looking forward to #3 - Night Train to Marrakech - coming August 2023. Highly recommended (but read #1 first) I was thinking about the book this morning and I think I've finally formed some solid opinions, so here we go. The SEGA chant does not exist on the sound test, as it is not implemented in the ROM at this point.
