Description

After a widely successful tour across the globe, Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam finds its way to your bookshelf. Julaybib (ra) teaches us the lessons of being beloved in the sight of Allah and His messenger (saw). From the eighth century onwards, the Muslim townsfolk of North Africa were well aware that fifty stages away across the desert to the south lay a land inhabited by black people which was the source of gold, ivory and slaves. This came about after several teams across the University championed the definition, and the University community led on several awareness-raising discussions that took place during Islamophobia Awareness Month in 2021. The chapter on Islam in West Africa provides an educational insight into the history of the African Kingdoms such as Ghana, Takrur and Mali.

Usama ibn Zayd (ra) too was honoured by being appointed by the Prophet (saw) himself, as the commander of the army against the Byzantines, despite his youth, paving the way for the expansion of Islam into the Levant and Egypt.

The role of Black Muslims in the crystallisation of our faith and religion was one that was so integral, the least we can do is educate ourselves and acknowledge the intertwining of Islam at its core and black history. Representation The SU represents students in a variety of ways, from our eight campaign groups to our annual leadership elections! For delegates who wish to obtain a CPD Certificate of Attendance, it is the responsibility of delegates to register their details with a LSE steward at the end of the event and as of 1 September 2014 a certificate will be sent within 28 days of the date of the event attended by the CPD Certification Service.

In writing this review, my only slight criticism to what is otherwise a very informative book, was going to be that although the book is subtitled ‘Black history in Islam’, there is little mention of East Africa, which also has a deep and profound Islamic history, except in the context of the first hijrāh to Abyssinia in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. No one was aware of who his mother or father was, and this was detrimental in a time when importance was placed on one’s lineage. Before embracing Islam, Sumayyah (ra) a Black Abyssinian (modern day Ethopia) woman was a slave in Makkah, who was owned by Abu Hudhaifah (ra). She was honoured by being a motherly figure to the Prophet (saw) and was told that she was a woman of Jannah. Follow LSE public events on Twitter for notification on the availabilility of an event podcast, the posting of transcripts and videos, the announcement of new events and other important event updates. As the title suggests, far too long has the discussion of the black companions of the Prophet Muhammed revolved around Bilal, and other prominent figures such as Umm Ayman and Zaid ibn Harithah are rarely mentioned.

Umm Ayman (ra) was the first among the early Muslims and like others, faced punishment of the Quraish. Spanning a thousand years of history–and bringing the story to the present through ethnographic fieldwork in Senegal, Gambia, and Mauritania–Rudolph Ware documents the profound significance of Qur’an schools for West African Muslim communities. A condensation and updating of his African Muslims in Antebellum America: A Sourcebook (1984), noted scholar of antebellum black writing and history Dr.This is an excellent book, concise in 200 pages and comprehensive in that it covers from Adam to the contemporary USA as far as Black Muslim history, and I really wish it was in all of our Islamic centers, libraries, and communities along with works like those of Habeeb Akende, Shaikh Adeyinka Mendes, Imam Dawud Walid, Dr.
