It’s not as though he doesn’t enjoy a little danger, just that he doesn’t gorge himself on it, unlike some people. One of my favorite parts is seeing how Cardan came to own Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass; it's one of my favorite stories, but it's interesting to see a fairytale character being gifted a human fairytale and amazed by it. Some of the scenes from his youth were harrowing yet some of the later scenes, with Jude’s family, left me grinning like mad. Although not pivotal to the main plot and story it gives it an edge that it didn’t have before reading this.

He’s grateful, of course, but it feels as though it’s just another of the ridiculous, absurd, dangerous things she does. Holly Black adds to Cardan’s character and the world of The Folk of the Air series without just rewriting the story from another character’s point for view. They got to be cruel and selfish, to preen in front of mirrors and poison apples, and trap girls on mountains of glass. Some might think of him as a strong draught, burning the back of one’s throat, but invigorating all the same. An illustrated addition to the New York Times bestselling Folk of Air trilogy that started with The Cruel Prince, from award-winning author Holly Black. He was a villain, then a villain in name only, then a king, but he remains a soft, vulnerable character inside.

Jude, who struggles with a world she both loves and hates and would rather be powerful and safe than good, is a compelling narrator. A prince of Faerie, nourished on cat milk and contempt, born into a family overburdened with heirs, and a nasty little prophesy hanging over his head — since the hour of Cardan’s birth, he has been alternately adored and despised.New York Times bestselling author, Holly Black reveals a deeper look into the dramatic life of Elfhame’s enigmatic high king, Cardan.

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is a novella that focuses on Elfhame's enigmatic High King, Cardan.Readers familiar with Cardan and Jude’s tumultuous and sometimes troubling love will recognize notes within this repeated tale, but each telling also stands alone as a complete tale, one that feels both inevitable and fresh.

Seeing all the background details to events that took place gives the reader such a better understanding almost like you’re in the mind of the character and nothing beats that! It all begins when a troll named Aslog tells young Cardan a story, which they revisit multiple times over the course of his life and the novella. And how this lead to him liking human tales, being surprised by their imaginations, and collecting more human books. How Cardan begins to notice Jude more and more, developing feelings for her without being able to identify what they are.Talvez o único problema seja que eu tive que parar e reler as cenas para me lembrar exatamente do que estava acontecendo e de como terminaram. Brimming with Black’s customary faerie magic, this atmospheric prequel to the events of The Folk of the Air trilogy digs deep into Cardan’s past to unearth some incredible revelations. Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. Stories from another character’s POV can be disappointing due to tone issues and the like, but Cardan’s POV was perfectly executed.
