Description

A Hyperstition, or an idea which functions retrocausally to bring about their own reality. [8] In short although it did not exist at first the idea of Doveland told in modern stories may retroactively grant it some foothold in reality. A famous literary example is found in 'Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius' (1940) by magic-realist Jorge Luis Borges. The world of Tlön begins in the story as fictional, with the protagonist actively seeking out footnotes and rare documents with fleeting references to the supposedly fabulous place. As the story progresses Tlön takes on an increasingly material reality, with an established history and relics. The story parallels how Doveland emerged from mysterious google search suggestion, then grew through research to the point it took on a sort of reality in the memory of real Wisconsinites.

Nor are such vanishing towns limited to real-life examples. Fiction gives us everything from the fabled Brigadoon, which comes and goes, to places like Silent Hill, itself based on the real-world town of Centralia, PA, where coal fires still burn underground. Our fascination with such places often leads to situations in which we may be confident that a town was once in a place, even if it wasn't.

Doveland, Wisconsin, real or fake?

Here’s what’s real: Project Sanguine. Project ELF, too. In fact, Project Sanguine is perhaps best thought of as the blue sky version of Project ELF — the Platonic ideal version, the version that arose from brainstorming without the need to consider limitations. Both were U.S. Navy projects intended to facilitate communication with deep-sea submarines — although one never quite got off the ground, and the other has since been declared obsolete.

A third theory as to why Doveland seemingly vanished from existence is that Doveland might have been destroyed by a “military science experiment that went horribly wrong”. This sounds ominous, to be sure, but is most likely speculation from those who think the “rule of cool” applies to the real world. A metropolis that in the present day turned into as soon as scattered into separate rural townships as a result of the failing financial system, or a protection force metropolis that turned into as soon as abandoned as soon because it turned into as soon as out of operation. Some have urged ‘Challenge Sanguine’ of the ’80s as an clarification for Dowland’s sudden disappearance. A second quote repeats much the same information: “I just learned of all the noise surrounding Doveland, and I think I can add some insight,” the quote says. “Doveland was a small town in Wisconsin that housed a lot of military families. My father lived there for a year or two and spoke of it occasionally. The main thing I remember is that it had to do with ‘Project Sanguine’ in the early 60’s.” However, this quote also goes to note that the reason for the town’s alleged disappearance wasn’t “X-Files type stuff”; rather, it’s thought that Doveland was “destroyed after an incident” of some kind. “I thought they were digging up a ton of land for something and they flooded the town or something, but this is a rehashed secondhand memory from years ago,” the quote reads.A post from a now-deleted (and, uh… questionable, from what I can tell) Tumblr that’s been preserved thanks to a reblog from a different, still-extant Tumblr contains most of the information available about the Doveland, Wisconsin legend. I’ll quote the post at length, in the event that the Tumblr I found the reblog on eventually gets erased from the internet, too: Outside of memories and stories from relatives there are also ephemera such as mugs and shirts bearing Doveland's name. [1] Many of the online comments about Doveland include the detail that it was inhabited mostly by military personnel and their families, ostensibly for the construction of this antenna array. This has led many to speculate that perhaps people simply left the town once Project Sanguine was canceled and, being a military-based town, it simply faded out of people’s minds. Rankerand ObdscUrban Legends also offer more theories as to how Doveland, Wisconsin may have completely vanished including;

The Navy instead opted for the smaller version, Project ELF, which was built in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula and operated between 1989 and 2004.So how does Doveland, Wisconsin fit in with Projects Sanguine and ELF? In a few ways, although it’s worth noting that the potential connections weren’t introduced into the story until it had already been circulating for a bit. The quotes collected by Obscurban Legend suggest that the town was flooded — either accidentally or on purpose — during the construction of Project Sanguine. There are plenty of theories as how a town – along with its residents – could simply vanish into thin air overnight. Some claim Doveland was swallowed up by a sinkhole or completely leveled by an earthquake, but that feels the least likely considering more people in the state would remember an earthquake of that potential magnitude. A town or unincorporated settlement that was destroyed by damming, similar to Werner. However towns that 'vanished' this way were historically well documented. [3]
