In Outlander Leander, unusual circumstances have led Nagdecht to have two generals. General Glaive is the new, younger general, and is shown getting personally involved in missions with his private unit. When asked where General Oske is, however, General Glaive states, "At the castle, where he always is", suggesting Oske is an Armchair General. Sleepwalkers: Imperial Rivalries and the Great War. Publisher: Dr. Richter Konflictsimulationen. Designer: Dr. Benjamin Richter. Price: 14.95 Passed inspection: A compact, multiple player game that highlights European competition and diplomacy while still conveying the impact of conflict between great powers at the dawn of the 20th Century. Failed basic: Negotiations are central to the course of the game to the point that the experience can feel like ‘Diplomacy-lite’. If you are looking for a more structured game that does not rely on diplomatic negotiations, then Sleepwalkers may not be for you (but give it a chance!). The end of the 19th Century was a complex period for the major states of Europe. Much of the world was – or was in the process of becoming – enmeshed in various colonial empires, providing the raw materials for the imperial states. These colonies were areas of friction both internally for the occupied peoples and externally between the imperial powers. Aside from imperial ambitions, the world, but Europe in particular was experiencing... Read More These questions and many more are put before the reader in this book which throws the reader into several carefully chosen consequential crossroads moments during the Second World War. Straight away the author throws in the scenario and then……you…….whoever you may be. It is an interesting and unique way to present a brand of history which in the UK has become something of an obsession for my demographic. Of course, the weight of history draws heavily and one cannot just ignore hindsight. But the author carefully counters this leading up to this decision point. This is why the choice you think is obvious wasn’t necessarily then. This is how high risk the historically correct decision was. Or better yet………..this was the catastrophic mistake and this is why the hapless historical figure fell right into the trap. I really cannot praise The Armchair General too highly. It is good fun that is based on solid research by a professional historian and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Sorry for been silent for much time. Now my major activity is transferred to the http://naraexpert.com/ project. But anyway, I'm here too... Passed Inspection: Highly detailed but very playable expansions to a classic game system, easy to learn, beautiful componentsIn David Drake's Hammer's Slammers, many of the titular mercenary unit's employers are distant from the actual fighting, and often have their own ideas on how the Slammers "should" do their job. The Hunted is Gregory M. Smith’s solitaire game covering the German submarine force during the second half of the Battle of the Atlantic through the end of World War Two. Using the same game engine as ‘The Hunters” the game puts the player in command of a German submarine and sends you on patrol in search of Allied merchants and warships. The Allies are capable and tough opponents. The game creates an immersive narrative that has you stalking your prey and then hoping to survive the wrath of the increasingly effective escorts. You are unlikely to survive! An informative and engaging game that explores the experience of the U-boats in the latter half of the war at sea. Type VIIC41 Eleya: I’m not a scientist, Admiral, and I’m not a diplomat, either. I’m a soldier, plain and simple. You point me at a battlefield, I will give you a victory. This is what I do, Admiral. This is what I do. This person may be a civilian whose only exposure to the military or military history is through academic or self-study, or a former member of the military, who was of low rank and/or has no experience with planning or strategic decision-making. In both cases, these individuals claim to be more capable of analysing combat conditions and making strategic judgments than past military commanders who have been responsible for such analysis and decisions. Examples of Usage

The armchair military appears in Discworld a few times, where there's much general critique of this style of warfare. The disconnect is especially notable in Night Watch, which features several scenes of two officers discussing the situation in their tent while Vimes (and the rest of the Night Watch) are engaged in the real fighting. In the 1979 All Quiet on the Western Front the protagonist is home on leave. When the civilians start spouting off their own theories about how to win the war, he tunes out of the conversation. In the 1930 version, the civilians have the audacity to dismiss the protagonist's experiences in the war by saying he hasn't seen the whole of it compared to them who apparently know a lot more, as they are sitting around a table, smoking cigars and moving pieces around a map. All Paul can do is sit and elicit an expression of sombre disbelief.
