Measured performance of the FX-Audio DAC-X6 is rather disappointing. It loses to similarly priced Fiio E10K and by a larger margin to Topping D30. Is this worth K1,100.00? It is to me. Your mileage may vary and will depend largely on the headphones you use and in what format/device you play your music. Onboard audio for a PC/Mac is already a step above your mobile phone. If you already own a decent set of headphones, love music, and want an improvement in your listening experience then I feel a DAC/Headphone Amplifier combo like the DAC-X6 is a good investment. I also love the physical volume knob and do feel when (not if) I upgrade to better headphones the DAC-X6 will serve me well!

FX-Audio DAC-X6 MKII review – Is This A New Budget King?

Noise floor is too high when used with 32 ohm in ear monitors. Not usable for any in ear monitor. Topping L30 amp was dead quite when used with same monitor. Customers have to bear any form of custom/import/processing fees that are applicable for your parcel. Amp: ZeroZone KSA5 (KG Krell klone) , HLLY RMK5 (Beyer A1 clone) , FX-Audio DAC-X6; prev: Gustard H10Yeah; this is a mains powered amp (rather than usb, or battery), that's one of the factors why I chose it. This is surely the (most) correct category. I don't know about you but to my eyes, there is no sine wave of any sort in the output of FX-Audio DAC-X6. It is dominated by noise and who knows what else (in red). The cyan one is from Topping D30 which takes the crown again as the best of the three. I am going to present this in two parts. First part in this post is the usual set that you see from me. For the second part, since this DAC has S/PDIF input, I thought I use that on it, Topping D30 and Exasound E32 to run a full suite of measurements. This is made possible by my Audio Precision Analyzer controlling the source signal which is not (easily) possible using the USB port (newer versions of AP support PC control but only using ASIO and not WASAPI). To make sure the data is not overwhelming, I will put these extra measurements in follow on posts.

The impulse response is also strange. Here is the graph for the X7 and also the Topping D10 impulse for a comparison. Doesn't it look like a minimal phase impulse VS a linear phase impulse? (measurements made via a Scarlett 2i4 2nd Gen and REW). Hmmm. Interesting question. Actually, I'd totally forgotten that those 'pre-outs' were there. (My desire was for some pre-ins, so I could try it as a standalone amp, to compare against the H10.) But now, I realise that I may be able do a dac comparison, instead. The feature set is quite rich with USB, optical (toslink) and coax S/PDIF inputs. The unit is externally powered which is another unique thing in this low price rage. As such, power consumption from USB port is minimal at 50 milliamps. I kept at it and after a few careful listening sessions with music I know intimately, a few things became apparent. First, there was more bass, like it just sounded fuller. And yet, the additional bass did not overwhelm or bleed into the mids or highs. Second, the bass sounded crisper, like a drumbeat would be more precise with defined beginning and ending of the beat. For example, in A Thousand Kisses Deep, the clarity of both the male and female vocals is exceptional and its easy to hear the words both are singing.

I just got X6 this morning, listened to it and was actually surprised with how good it sounds. So I came here searching for measurements and realized they're one of the worst I recently saw... But it actually sounds very close to D30, maybe not as good but damn close. And this treble roll-off doesn't bother me because I can still hear all of the tiny atmospheric details, just not as pronounced as with some Toppings. I can still hear up to 18.5 KHz and I hate sharp noisy highs much more than rolled off highs. The Fostex did not and does not fare well on either dac amps. It is loud... BUT not loud enough. No oomph in the bass for example with both amps/dacs. The fostex does shine on my Yamaha home receiver. You see, a headphone amp is just a glorified output stage; the circuitry, and voltage output, is little different from the circuit that feeds the rca outputs from a dac, or pre-amp. Switching to Hifiman HE-400i headphones, most of the differences went away. After listening for a while, I could still hear some improvement from the DAC-X6 but clearly this is a less demanding headphone than the HD-650 is. It is also more comfortable to wear. With the exception of the Fostex T50 MK3, the other headphones sounded good and loud enough. But with neutral bass oomph compared to the E10k. Are you saying that they're totally not controlled by the volume knob, or just at too high a level?I’d like to add that you get circuit protection also at this price! What’s especially nice about the design of this dac is that it’s seems to be designed by actually listening at the result of the design. I bought the dac X6 Kgsuss (which looks a lot like the FX audio design) as a replacement for a soundblaster E5. The latter was three times the price but had all kinds of issues,(audible noise was one of them) That’s remarkable because both use the CS4398 DAC from Cirrus. It’s an old chip but it blows ESS sabre dacs and AKM Velvet sound/shit DAC’s completely away though the measurements of it are slightly worse. Topping uses the latest DAC chips but that’s all. Open one up and you’ll find almost no other components at all. Compare that to a Marantz – HD-DAC 1 (also designed around the CS4398) and you’ll find that FX audio did a pretty good job trying to actually design a DAC around this chip. I should mention that the Fiio E10 was oscillating at its peak output into my 33 ohm load. I had to turn down the volume to "6" instead of max of "8" for the loaded measurement. The FX-Audio DAC-X6 on the other hand had no such problem so measurement is at its max output. I then switched to headphone listening and comparing the DAC-X6 against Fiio E10K. Without level matching, the DAC-X6 easily pulls ahead. Even with level matching, the DAC-X6 sounded noticeably better with the Sennheiser HD-650. There was more bass, more clarity, etc. The deviation is around the same point as Topping D30 but then the error becomes wild and incorrect in a hurry, ending at some 8.2 db of error. So clearly a worse implementation than the Topping D30.

I have a DAC X7 (the model just after the X6) at home and measured it. There's a +30° phase shift between 1 kHz and 10 kHz.Meanwhile, I spotted a post somewhere where you mentioned you now have the Topping DX7. Are you going to review it soon? Here we see declining harmonic distortion which is good (compared to Fiio E10k) but there is a rise in noise floor proportional to frequency after 16 Khz or so. When someone asks me a question I do not understand, I replay with "Not sure" or "I do not understand". The FX Audio DAC-X6 comes in a basic brown box with the company brand on the front and “Mini Audio DAC. Your Music Dream!” There are two analog outputs, one line level that is fixed and the other, on the front going through a headphone amplification stage. The knob controls the level of headphone output.
