The maximum brightness rating confirms the eye test: This is a colorful, bright, and sharp panel. We just wish the tablet lasted longer on a charge. For many laptop shoppers, portability is king, and there's nothing more portable than a tablet. With touch screens and support for a pen or stylus, the most popular laptops today often do double duty as tablets. There are two ways to achieve this: Convertible 2-in-1 designs that rotate between notebook and slate modes with 360-degree hinges, or detachable models that let you remove the keyboard entirely to become a standalone tablet. You have a keyboard and touchpad when you need it, or can go all touch screen when that's more convenient. Due to the paint processes used, a colour variation with matching products is possible and therefore may not be a 100% match.

Detaching the tablet and leaving the heft of the keyboard behind is optimal when, say, you're actively presenting a slideshow on a big screen and using the tablet to draw notes on the slides in real time. Reattaching the keyboard takes mere seconds, so you will be able to easily (and comfortably) change the slideshow's content during your lunch hour if you need to change your talk's focus for your afternoon session. Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13 or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines and workstations even have 17 or 18-inch screens, but those are hardest to carry. If you cancel you must return the goods to us at your own expense. You are responsible for the risk of loss or damage when you return the goods, so you should take out adequate postal insurance to cover their value. In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop's display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise. On its own, the XPS 13 2-in-1 presents capable results for general productivity as far as everyday home and office tasks. There’s no noticeable slowdown in general use, and you’ll be able to run a few applications and multiple tabs simultaneously. For the type of product this is, that’s really all you need. We primarily test PCs using UL's PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and content-creation workflows to measure overall performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing. We also run PCMark 10's Full System Drive test to assess the load time and throughput of a laptop's boot drive.

These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop's materials to the feel of its touchpad. The rest of the specs (screen size, storage space, the processor used, and so on) for convertibles and detachable hybrids generally follow the same lines as more standard laptops and Windows tablets, which means you'll have to pay more if you want additional speed, fancier features, or a thinner, flashier design. Unsurprisingly, graphics power is not a strong suit here. These slim and portable machines utilize only the integrated graphics processing built into the CPU rather than a discrete GPU, which has its clear limits. For what it’s worth, the M2 again shows up the other systems, but none is especially prepared for graphics-based applications or gaming. Battery and Display Tests These aren't beefed-up Android tablets—you're still buying a PC with a full operating system, whether that's ChromeOS or Windows. Apple, with its MacBooks,isn't a player in this category of laptop; Apple has doggedly pointed folks who need a touch screen and tablet/laptop convertibility toward its iOS-equipped iPad and iPad Pro lines, paired with an optional keyboard.

It’s when the XG Mobile comes into play that things get interesting. For the life of me, I’m baffled how they fit an RTX 3080 into such a small enclosure. Even though I wish Asus could have found a more elegant solution than that huge proprietary plug, I can’t argue with the results. The XG Mobile is the proverbial trap card, transforming it into the dark magician of gaming laptops. It doesn’t have any right to be as powerful as it is, but here we are, again impressed by Asus’ ingenuity. If you fail to return the goods, we will collect them, and will charge you the direct cost of collection. If you fail to take reasonable care of the goods before they are returned to us, and this results in damage or deterioration, we will charge you for the reduction in value. When we ran the Handbrake video transcoding benchmark, the Plus transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 8 minutes and 17 seconds, roasting the 9:47 category average. The MacBook Pro saw a time of 6:51. That is not too shabby for a mainstream laptop.. We covered the downsides of that for the XPS 13 itself in that review, but here, it doesn’t seem to have hindered things. This is probably a better overall 2-in-1 solution than the old convertible style, because folding the keyboard behind the screen is not as sleek or comfortable as holding a real tablet. The ports are limited, and the battery could last longer, but with the XPS Folio, this is a better-built and more capable laptop-replacing 2-in-1 than many rivals. The new XPS being a tablet, the component options have a ceiling, but they are surprisingly close to the full-size XPS 13.
