We did not come across this issue with our younger testers, but it was noticeable on our older tester. The bike has an adjustable seat making it suitable for ages 18 months to five years so your little one can grow up with their balance bike and you know it will last with their lifetime warranty. We particularly liked the addition of a rear brake, which has been designed for little hands to operate with no problem.

Designed for children aged 18 months and over (depending on their size and readiness for using a balance bike), the light weight means it is very easy for a young child to move it around. The designers are obviously keen cyclists themselves, who have put together something of professional quality. On a quick test in my garage, these bike wheels spun freely for 30 seconds longer than our Woom 1 balance bike. The saddle drops low enough for a child with an inside leg measurement of 30cm, making it suitable for first riders, while the upper weight limit of 30kg means a child could ride it for years and at least until they're old enough to transition to a pedal bike.

While our testers weren’t particularly bothered about this (it really was all about the motorbike sounds) we can certainly see its appeal. He's the creative and photography force behind the site, and has got a keen eye for good quality, well designed cycling kit. The Vogue has a colourful, customisable design that comes with more than 40 stickers and unique accessories including mini private registration plates. Although steering limiters don’t help riders who are at higher speeds, they are great for beginners to help them keep the handlebars in the right direction. Hornit says that the tyres should already be inflated on arrival, but they may need topping up to the correct air pressure – this was the case with the model we received, which may be a downside for families who don’t own a lot of bike equipment.

Designed to look like the iconic Raleigh Team Banana road bike, this mini balance bike version boasts a striking black and yellow glossy paint job on its sturdy aluminium frame. With an adjustable seat and handlebars, there’s plenty of scope for this to last for many years and once they’ve cracked balancing on this, moving onto a pedal bike should be a breeze. Our two-year-old, three-year-old and five-year-old testers tried out a selection of balance bikes for over a month – indoors and outdoors – to find the best ones, taking everything from how easy they were to manoeuvre to how the tyres performed into consideration. They provide an early glimpse of new products, showcasing releases from both exciting new startups and well-loved brands. The Micro Balance Bike 2in1 Chopper is a balance bike that will grow with your child, as the handlebars and the seat are adjustable.it’s a nice lightweight model and the cream, inflatable rubber tyres – as well as looking gorgeous – handled well on bumpy ground. Thanks to a seat post that can be adjusted with a lever and handlebars that can be rotated with an Allen key (included) to alter the reach, it can be perfectly adjusted to fit a growing rider. By this age, many toddlers and preschoolers are getting aggressive on their balance bikes and a handbrake can help safety stop faster than with their feet.

For such a sleek design and construction, we were left scratching our heads a little bit on the center of the frame. When cruising and gliding around the house, our 3-year-old thought they were pretty much the coolest thing ever. Not to mention, once they get tired of riding mid-way down the trail, the Airo is easy to carry in one hand, parents, which makes this bike one of our faves. Also, for children of this age group who may be getting closer to moving to a pedal bike, it’s helpful for them to get used to a hand-operated braking system, rather than scraping their shoes against the path to stop. However, at the lowest seat height the bottom of the seat post is pretty close to the ground giving only 1. We also like the footrests and the quick-release clamps for tool-free handlebar and seat adjustment.
