When trying a pair on for the first time, listen for the 'whoosh' sound when you slide your feet in - that's the sound of all the air leaving the shoe to confirm it is the correct size, but do a walking test to be sure. They shouldn't pinch anywhere, nor should your feet be moving around inside.

Articulation geometry is behind the somewhat quirky name of the latest spiked shoe from Puma. The new technology allows the shoe to move with your foot while still providing a strong level of support. In practice, it works brilliantly and the shoes were a pleasure to play golf in. The styling is subtle but smart and Puma’s Ignite Foam provides a good amount of comfort and energy return in the midsole. The shoes passed the waterproof test in damp conditions where there was rain around, although I probably wouldn't choose to go out in them if it was raining as the mesh section around the top of the foot could be a little liable to getting wet. The Alphacat Nitro design features a new and innovative NITRO FOAM material, which is infused with nitrogen gas to create exceptional cushioning and energy return with every step. The newly designed material is also extremely lightweight, allowing for an energy saving design.

Adapt Foam, which rivals the likes of Adidas' Boost technology, is made from a combination of EVA cushioning and an impact resistant polymer. The Proadapt outsole not only looks cool but also does an important job of providing traction on both soft and hard surfaces due to the two distinct patterns. Many players choose to have one pair for winter and another, lighter pair for summer to keep them fresh and suit different requirements. The Proadapt Multi Material Outsole is divided into two distinct sections, with an abrasion-resistant TPU perimeter that provides stability and traction on soft surfaces, whilst the central Crystal Rubber unit is engineered to ensure plenty of grip and a soft underfoot feel on hard surfaces.

You have enough to think about when you're playing, so having a reliable pair of golf shoes that just get the job done are exactly what is necessary. When it comes to the right fit it is also worth considering different laces. Normal laces are good for most but for some golfers, BOA laced shoes provide more convenient fastening and shouldn’t loosen during the course of a round, but are usually a tad more expensive. Puma have been one of the major players in keeping this trend going in recent years, as they have a wide range of models available which blur the lines between casual, fashion-conscious trainers and functional golf shoes. If you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain then a waterproof shoe is a must. The best designs will keep your feet bone dry however if you play golf in glorious sunshine most of the time, then you may view other factors as more significant. The latest of these is the new Proadapt Alphacat, which Puma says is the 'King of Comfort' and is designed to provide the 'Alpha' of all spikeless shoes. What's It All About? There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides . You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised. What We Tried: Spikeless golf shoes offer off-course versatility. They are perfect for driving in the car to the golf course, playing a round, and then driving home again because they are usually light and comfortable, but most won't offer as much traction as a spiked shoe. The reason for this is because golf shoe technology is so good these days that golfers can experience the relaxed, lightweight comfort that these shoes offer, without losing out on traction or support in comparison to a spiked option.

Spikeless golf shoes have been one of golf's biggest success stories over the last decade or so. No matter where you are in the world or what time of the year you are there, you'll see golfers teeing it up wearing spikeless shoes. To put the new Alphacat shoe to the test and see whether they really are the 'King of Comfort', I headed down to Denton GC in Manchester for a full day's testing. To be honest, once I was out on the course I couldn't really feel anything different with this traction compared to a usual pair of spikeless shoes, but I completed my round of golf without any slips or feelings of instability despite playing from a variety of different lies. The overall shaping just seems to scrunch the toes rather than let them naturally spread. PUMA ALPHACAT NITRO Spikeless Golf Shoes: Marked Improvement PUMA Golf introduces the new ALPHACAT NITRO, a spikeless shoe with premium cushioning that provides explosive energy and propulsion with each step. With the new Alphacat Nitro PUMA continues to raise the bar in the spikeless golf shoe category, creating a fashion-forward design with hi-tech materials and advanced performance. On the sole, the contrast of the grey and orange lugs is a nice eye-catching feature which you get glimpses of whilst walking or in the follow through, as well as providing a handy visual indication of where Puma's traction technology is helping you out.
