I would definitely buy this series again; it’s reminded me of so many stories long forgotten. My grandmother was a very young Victorian but she brought the continuity of times past and family into our lives by telling stories of her mother and grandparents, the latter pre-dating Victoria. Some of these rattle down the years – the necessary jet beads from Whitby for mourning; the dislike of London by those in the Provinces who viewed it as a ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and based most of their ideas upon Oliver Twist’ and ‘Little Nell’. Sergeant Cork is a British detective television series which first aired between 1963 and 1968 on ITV. It was a police procedural show that followed the efforts of two police officers and their battle against crime in Victorian London. In all 66 hour-long episodes were aired during the five-year run, although the last episode was not broadcast until January 1968, 16 months after the others. [1] Journalist Tom Sutcliffe has credited it as a first example of the use of the Victorian-era policeman in a television crime series. [2] It seems one of those shows that has been easily forgotten, nobody seems to know about it, I found it just by chance, but I'm so glad I did. Barrie and Gaunt are both wonderful, you'll see several well known faced pop up throughout the run. John Barrie stars as Sergeant Cork in this wonderful crime drama series from the 1960's. I can't help but wonder if this was one of the shows that laid the foundations for shows we would all know and love, shows like Z Cars, The Bill etc.

There is a real quality to this series, it has an air of grandeur about it, Cork really does mix with the affluent Society, as well as the less fortunate. It's the great variety that makes it so watchable, one episode you'll watch a murder mystery, the next could be a fraud, followed by a grand theft. Personally I like the mysteries best, but then I am a whodunnit addict.
