Having waited for a long time to see on Sarah's blog that this would be published, I almost started crying when I found out it would be - the only reason I didn't was that I had gone quite numb from excitement A fan on Goodreads For teens or younger readers, I do hesitate a bit. Yes, these books are technically in the YA genre. But there is a lot of fighting, a lot of sword swinging and killing going on in these books.

Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom’s most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful Assassin’s Guild and its scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, she yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. But when Arobynn dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, Celaena finds herself acting independently of his wishes and questioning her own allegiance. There isn't sex, swearing or inappropriate content if that's what you're concerned about. There is some mentioning about periods and there is some violence (although it isn't that descriptive). Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close How do you feel about stories where the protagonist is forced to choose among various options, all of them bad? Was someone you know ever in that position? What did they do? How did they decide? If you like the kinds of books that I described, then I think you’ll like this series as much as I did. What are these books about? In books one and two, there is a little bit of physical stuff going on between characters, but not tons. In book 4, the physical tension between several pairs of characters starts to ramp up and in book five, there is a fairly specific/graphic description of intimate relations. In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King’s Champion.

Most of the main characters are described as having dark or golden skin. The story takes place in a fantasy world with extremes of wealth and poverty. Many characters resist being limited by stereotypes. Well as long as the kid is mature enough to not make a big fuss about what is in that book (which is mostly kissing and blood and no sex)In the third book ( Heir of Fire), Sarah Maas starts some real work on a pretty serious and more lasting connection for the main female character. In the remaining books, what was built in book 3 continues, but most of the tension in those books is not generated between the main male and female characters.

Sarah J. Maas’s Life Sounds Like Pure Chaos — in a Good Way!

The libraries all either say it's mature or for like 15 years old and up but really it's not even that mature. I do feel like adults like to exaggerate the amount of graphicness in books like these because they don't want their kids to know about these things because they feel like they're too young to be exposed to these kinds of things. Also, if the child has started reading this and they really like it and you've only just now heard bad stuff about the books let them keep reading because they will likely want to kill you if you take it from them.A prequel to the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas explores the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling-and deadly-world. Learning and books are highly valued by the main characters, who resist the king's book-burning, scholar-killing ways. The knowledge in the story pertains to the fantasy world. Home > The Prince and the Captain of the Guard of his kingdom retrieve her, as she possesses some pretty useful skills (she’s an assassin, skilled in the use of swords, other blades/weapons, and is pretty much bad***). Do I wish my daughter's never had to know or experience the most unpleasant side of of sexism and objectification? Of course. Will it serve them to pretend it doesn't exist and censor any material that alludes to it? Absolutely not. Children are corrupted not by the content they consume so much as by the repeated actions of society that doesn't fail to reach their notice.

Maintain selfless dedication to duty, even when your loved ones are ungrateful. True love, skill, and huge self-control overcome many obstacles. Try to do the right thing even when all your choices are bad. Popular author Maggie Stiefvater is in top form in what is arguably her most complex and ambitious book to date, and the first in a magical new series. I think it wise to read this yourself first, and if you are unwilling to do so, or it's not your style - err on the side of caution and delay a year longer before recommending this to your child. I've just finished it and am happy to let my 15 year old read it. When I was much younger, 12 -13 I discovered much more sexually explicit books and delighted in them, which is all part of growing up. Chances are, if you're questioning if your teenager can handle sexual content - you're too late anyway due to what they've undoubtedly already consumed. I hate to even give you the names of the characters, because naming the characters can tell you how the books play out later in the series! In the first installment, set in the times of castles, kings, and horses (no industry) the main character (Celaena Sardothien) is mining salt by hand as a slave. Teens and adults drink wine, sometimes to excess that causes them to be hung over the next day. A character is addicted to opium.

About Sarah J. Maas

I would say that it really depends on the person who is reading. If they are a sheltered child or younger than eight or nine then they shouldn't read this. Sarah J Maas's novels have been an online sensation with bloggers the world over hearing about her. Her protagonist is 18 year old Celaena; beautiful but deadly and destined for greatness but only if she can free herself from the life sentence she's serving... Fast-paced and epic in stature this is not to be missed.
