Weisz: At a certain point I said goodbye to Sean and Alice, then went to my office and shut the door to do the acting. I was a producer first, then actress. I really had my hands pretty full. There were some things that had to be dealt with, but I was really in the point of view of the twins whereas Alice was inside as a writer and outside creatively controlling the whole show. I couldn’t stand in two places then. I hadn’t seen any of the show. Then I took my acting hat off and joined hands with Alice at the end and we had a long post-production editing process together. We were together at the beginning and the end in that way and in the middle I was just Beverly and Elliot.

Birch: I think we had decided early on that they were obstetricians [rather than gynecologists], which is different from the film. This was partly due to story - it meant we had access to a whole new kind of patient and central characters, but also that they, and particularly Beverly, had these huge ambitions to build a centre that will change how women birth. For Elliott, it’s much more about scientific discovery There’s less empathy or compassion – it’s purely driven by her own scientific excitement.A riveting exploration of the horror around who belongs and who doesn’t, crafted from occasionally messy clay…”

He’s an amazing collaborator. We were huge fans of his work. Director Peter Greenaway claims that Cronenberg queried him about his film A Zed & Two Noughts for two hours before going on to make Dead Ringers eight months later. I went first to the building in which the Marcuses had been found dead. Cyril had lived there — in apartment 10H at 1161 York Avenue — for some five years, apparently since the time he had separated from his wife and children; Stewart had moved in with him sometime in the last few months. To the doormen and building employees, the two doctors were always distant, remote, too arrogant for a “Good morning” or even a “Hot weather, isn’t it?” Oscar-winner Weisz joined the series’ showrunner Alice Birch ( Normal People, Lady Macbeth) and actress Britne Oldford ( Skins, The Umbrella Academy) to world premiere the series at Canneseries ahead of its six-episode rollout on April 21. The series earned cheers from the audience inside Cannes’ Lumiere theatre in the Palais des Festivals during its opening scene and a standing ovation following its screening in Competition at the event. Retrieved April 12, 2017.Like so many other people I spoke with this summer, I found myself uncharacteristically haunted by the deaths of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, the twin gynecologists found gaunt and already partially decayed in their East 63rd Street apartment amidst a litter of garbage and pharmaceuticals. The story of their deaths had, for me, even in its barest bones, that element of stupefying reality that Philip Roth calls an “embarrassment” to the writer’s imagination; here was a reality that could make the capabilities of even the most imaginative writer seem meager. The film won numerous honors, including for Irons' performance, and 10 Genie Awards, notably Best Motion Picture. Toronto International Film Festival critics have ranked it among the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time. urn:lcp:twins0000bari:epub:71224128-0463-4034-92b3-a6b4e3f21387 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier twins0000bari Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t7bt02b3v Invoice 1652 Isbn 0399118667 At the same time, the brothers seem to have feared alienating each other. Or at least Stewart feared alienating Cyril. A woman who was Cyril’s patient and grew to dislike his personality nevertheless felt that the Marcus twins had an expertise with women who had previously miscarried and now wanted to give birth. On one occasion she recommended such a friend to Stewart, explaining to her friend that she was sure she would not be able to bear Cyril’s icy mannerisms. The friend called Stewart and said she had been recommended to him by a patient of Cyril’s. Stewart refused to see her. “I can’t take patients away from my brother,” he explained. The woman argued with him. “I am not Cyril’s patient; my friend was Cyril’s patient and she has recommended you.” Stewart, this woman recalled, “grew apoplectic and he said he would never see my friend or me.” Annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards". How did you work together in terms of the writing process. Rachel, did you wear your producer hat throughout the production? Prime Video’s new series Dead Ringers reimagines David Cronenberg’s 1988 twisted psychological thriller as a female-powered tale starring Rachel Weisz in a double role as the infamous Mantle twins. Weisz: Always for television. From the beginning. The film is perfect and iconic and we wouldn’t be interested in trying to redo it in any way. We wanted to do something else. It was about finding a new form for it. Birch: I don’t understand what the reason would be to make it as a film again. The film is amazing. So yes, the series gives us more time. And it gives us a chance to create a new set of characters and follow them on a different journey. TV has become increasingly novelistic. Several aspects of the deaths contributed to my stupefaction. One was the very fact of the men’s twinship, the doubleness which had given them a mutual birth date and now a mutual death date as well. Another was the men’s prominence. When beggars die in a state of bizarre deterioration in New York, there are no comets seen; when two doctors still on the staff of a mighty New York hospital die in a state of bizarre deterioration, the heavens themselves blaze forth questions of responsibility. Had these men actually been seeing patients — perhaps even performing operations — while already on their route to disintegration? (Such was the case, as it turned out.)Bill Terrell, the building repairman, says that he knew from the first that there was a dead body within. Neighbors had been complaining for two days that there was a smell emanating from 10H. Terrell says, “I knew what the smell meant. I was in combat, you see. The real conflict.”
