This might seem like a big difference but the Ektar H35 is a half-frame camera, so actually, the lens is more like a 31mm focal length, so they’re effectively the same. The Kodak Ektar H35 allows you to let go and focus on photography’s purpose, capturing moments and memories. The fact that the makers have some skin in the game when it comes to making film a popular, viable format again means the Kodak Ektar H35 doesn’t just feel like a cheap, cynical cash-grab, piggybacking off a famous name, as licensed products sometimes do. and if you go in with too expectant a mindset, you’ll probably be disappointed when the scans come out. Great fun to pass around with friends and the half frame format means you get a lot of bang for your buck (I managed to get 55 shots on a 24 exposure roll - this will obviously depend on each roll but I got lucky).

Once you can see the film is winding on, then you’re good to go, close the backup and you can start taking pictures! The stark limitations on the exposure triangle means that no matter how diligent we may be in selecting the right film for the job, it’s inevitable that some shots on our roll will be under-exposed and some will be over-exposed. But because it must be pulled up and almost out of the body to allow film cassettes to be slid in and out of the film chamber, it felt loose and delicate to many users. The fact of the matter is that this camera makes everything so simple and subtle that there’s nothing to get in the way of the shooting experience. Plenty of light in this shot; I had no trouble scanning it and there are no colour corrections applied to this image. If you want to make a landscape photo you'll need to hold the camera sideways, somewhat unintuitive for many photographers.

For the other times, the lo-fi images that it makes will certainly appeal to an entire generation of photo nerds who are accustomed to perfect digital photography. If you don’t think there’s enough light to fully expose your ISO 100 film, Ektar is better to be left at home. However, group selfies will require holding the camera on its side to get a horizontal aspect ration, which can be difficult. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. The lower resolution and “portrait” orientation make half frame a fun format for photos of people, similar to Fuji Instax Mini film, but of course, you’re free to photograph anything you like.

And long as you accept (and ideally embrace) the compromises in quality that come with its format, the Kodak Ektar H35 does give you more for your money. Second, I would imagine that it’s more efficient to produce a single sheet of film and cut it into a large variety of formats than to manufacture multiple film speeds on separate machines (as they did in 1989-1991). I liked that it’s really light (due to low quality build) and I liked that it’s ready to go at any moment. And yes, most half-frame cameras feature 20-30mm lenses which yield a “normal” field of view for this format.

KODAK EKTAR H35 Half Frame Film Camera, 35mm, Reusable, Focus

Ideal for a film beginner or anyone looking to reduce film costs, the half frame film camera will allow you to double up on your 35 mm film and yield double the photos.

This reversal of roles, finding scenes to fit the camera rather than making the camera fit the scene, might be a refreshing change of pace for veteran photographers and may provide a unique perspective to newer photographers.

Technical mumbo jumbo and cosmetics opinions aside, the new Kodak Ektar H35N also brings a totally new feature to the table that has absolutely no tie-in to the previous model or seems to address any concerns that I’ve heard about it.

This is the perfect night out camera, so simple to use and pass around so everyone can have a go, and the pictures are reminiscent of old school disposables. For people like these, the H35 is a great camera and an important stepping stone within their photographic journey. I should mention, however, that even though the focal length of both the H35 and H35N is 22mm, RETO’s viewfinder in both cameras is closer to the 30mm viewfinder my 1960s Agfa Optima Parat half frame camera. This will overcome the long depth of field and get a little soft-focus effect to provide some separation and “pop.
