Description

Sentence strips may help children to reinforce their understanding of using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence. This activity may also help your child to be aware of punctuations. If you have ever taken the training for Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), the later phases of the system focus on commenting. They teach it by using sentence starters with the students. When they are still in the requesting phases they use an “I Want” starter. When they move to commenting we typically add “I see” and “I hear.”You could also easily add “I feel” (as in textures–I wouldn’t start this with emotions). Then, just like with describing, you set up situations in which the student uses those comments prior to making a request for a desired item. Any activity involving reading or writing improves vocabulary and comprehension. Sentence Strips also improves the vocabulary of children and comprehension. In this activity, frequently used words are only included and children can master the usage of common words. For younger learners, you can solidify their knowledge of clauses through mixed up sentences. Provide your class with a series of words written on cards which, when combined, make a complete sentence. You can begin with short independent clauses, and once your class is confident, you can introduce commas and dependent clauses. Try using different words such as if, whether, and that to help your students identify what types of clauses they are unscrambling.

A relative clause is a type of dependent clause and is used to give more information about a noun. Relative clauses are introduced by relative pronouns, such as that, which, when, who, and where: Reason/Detail/Fact (yellow): The place to give the reader a second reason, detail or fact that relates to and supports the topic sentence. Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I do not have the set for 2nd grade. But I will consider making one in the future. Students will practice sight words, transition words and even reading fluency and comprehension will improve with this activity. As this activity only requires columns and paper, it can be adapted to include columns for any kind of clause. For more able learners, you could ask them to split up the dependent clauses into relative and conditional. Write sentences on pieces of paper and cut them in half, so that each clause is separate. Mix up the halves and provide them to your class. On your whiteboard, draw a column for dependent clauses and a column for independent clauses. Ask your students to come up one at a time and place one strip in one of the columns. Once all the halves are on the whiteboard, ask your learners to draw lines between the halves to join them up again.
