TIP: Using coloured card makes this job much simpler and for added sparkle you could also cut out smaller gold stars to hang from the pipe cleaner around your head. If you need to provide your own baby Jesus prop, you can use a child's doll, swaddled in a blanket or towel, for your little Mary to carry. Follow our step-by-step picture guide to make a Nativity costume for Mary. 2 How to make a Joseph or Shepherd Nativity costume Dive into a world of historical wonder as you explore our extensive selection of Nativity costumes. Whether you're gearing up for a role in the Holy Family, the shepherds, angels, or the Three Wise Men, we've got you covered. No matter your role in this heartwarming narrative, we have the perfect costume waiting just for you.

Our favourite is a crown using a paper plate. Get a plate and make a dot in the middle. From there divide the plate into triangles of equal size. Using a pen knife or scissors pierce the middle and cut along the lines of the triangles to make the spikes of your crown. Adults will need to help children with this part. Then, decorate it as you see fit, using paint, colouring in crayons, felt, or gems for added sparkle. Once you've made the tunic (trust us: it's easy peasy) then you're pretty much halfway there to any Nativity costume. All you need to add are a few accessories depending on the character and you're sorted. Again, you can make a simple tunic for these costumes –just use a colourful or velvet fabric for a King or a Wise Man. For more regal accessories, add a statement piece of jewellery, such as a large pendant.Cut around the semi-circle so that your child has a hole to put their head through. If you like, you could stop here with the tabard, but if you want to make it neater then follow the next steps. Congratulations! Your child is appearing in their school Nativity play! It's a proud moment for any parent and you'll no doubt be excited to see your little one up there on the stage.

Of course, don't forget the crown! You can easily make a crown out of cardboard, and use some coloured tissue paper or glitzy wrapping paper to create the sparkling 'jewels'. And they'll need a present to carry for the baby Jesus; you can make this from an old cardboard box, covered in gold or shiny wrapping paper, too. All you need is a long rectangle of fabric to fashion into a tunic, or you can even cheat and adapt an old pillowcase for little ones! For the complete look, follow our step-by-step picture guide to making an Angel Nativity costume here. 6 How to make a stable animal Nativity costume TIP: You can use gold spray paint, but if you do use it outside to avoid inhaling fumes. Add texture to your crown with wire or tinsel. And if your angel or fairy requires some wings, try our fab homemade wings made out of paper plates here.

Kids love any excuse to get out the fancy dress box, and Christmas is no exception. If your little one is keen to put on a Nativity at home, or is playing a starring role as Joseph in the school play, look no further for info on how to put together a DIY Joseph costume! You can then decorate it in the colours of the animal. For added authenticity, cover the cardboard in furry fabric. Faces can then be painted to add an extra cute dimension to your child's outfit. TWIST: Use brown leaves as an alternative to paper. Fold the green leaves in half to make triangles and then add them together with golden ones, peg them together with paper clips until the glue dries. Make sure you’ve measured your child’s head. It’s an idea inspired by Mother Natured who have made a crown with garden leaves. Dressing Joseph Christmas is a great time of year to celebrate and get festive, and what better way to do that than with fancy dress?

You can do this with a sewing machine if you have one, but for a no-sew option use something like Wonderweb hemming tape. Place the tape on the inside of the fabric, a couple of inches up from the edge. Then, fold the rough edge of the fabric so that it covers the hemming tape. You can then place a damp cloth on top and run a hot iron along the hem to bond the tape in place. However, amongst all the excitement you've probably got the stress of making their Nativity play costume yourself. For the wise mens’ crowns the options are endless. There are dozens of templates online which you can use. Or alternatively get some thin-ish paper and do an origami crown. An angel Nativity costume is another easy one to rustle up. You may already have a fairy or angel costume at home, or at least a tutu, some fairy wings or a halo or tiara in your dressing-up box.
