Cooking takes time, while pre-made pouches are easy for your child to eat from, and don't involve cleaning up any dishes afterwards. Its ideal for little ones with dietary requirements, as many products are free from dairy, gluten, nuts, egg and soya. Until this age, they should be getting all the nutrients they need from breast milk or infant formula.

This means they cannot absorb lactose, which is a sugar that's naturally in milk and dairy products. These all have huge ranges, including purées and meals in glass jars if you're looking to cut down on your plastic use. This is supposed to make it easier to digest and help prevent digestive problems such as colic and constipation. Please tick if you would like to receive news, offers and information from our trusted and carefully selected partners that we think you might like.

It's occasionally used as an alternative to cows' milk formula for babies who have cows' milk allergy. She doesn't like baby rice much and doesn't seem that keen on fruits either so am running out of things to try. Goats' milk formulas are not suitable for infants with cows' milk allergy (also known as cows' milk protein allergy), as the proteins they contain are very similar. Semi-skimmed cows' milk is a suitable main drink for children over 2 who are eating a balanced diet.Less expensive than jarred products, especially those that are simply puréed fruit or vegetables - you can make these combinations far more cheaply at home with a hand blender.

Weaning your child from milk to solids isn't always easy, but there are some ways to make the process smoother.

Strangely she seems to love spinach so reckon she's going to end up looking like popeye ;-) Bit of a strange breakfast though and end up with green everywhere! When your baby is 1 year old, they can start to drink whole cows' milk or sheep's or goats' milk (as long as these milks are pasteurised). So my advice would be to try different porridges to see how your little one reacts and every now and again, maybe monthly, try the ones she reacted to again to see how she is and hopefully yours will grow out of it to. Likewise some can tolerate cheese and yoghurt but not milk itself, some will not react to cooked dairy produce but can't tolerate raw, and so on. Formula comes in 2 different forms: a dry powder you make up with water, or a ready-to-feed liquid formula.

I have avoided the porridge with milk powder and cow's milk since (used soya the other day and she was ok with that) but gave her a little bit of cheese the other day and she came out in the same rash, so I think it must be the cow's milk protein that is the problem. It's important to take extra care when making up and storing these products as powdered formula is not sterile and making it up at lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain. She has been fine on baby rice, fruit and veg but I gave her some organic plain baby porridge today and wherever the porridge touched her face it turned red and blotchy with little white welts. The doctor sent her for an allergy test which came back all fine, but it just stopped at about 8-9 months. First infant formula is based on whey protein which is thought to be easier to digest than other types of formula. The milk proteins in formula are more processed and hence harder for the body to "recognise" so some children will be fine with formula but unable to tolerate other dairy produce. In our latest baby food survey, we asked 268 parents with children up to five years old to rate each baby food brand they've tried. Although it's often described as suitable for "hungrier babies", there's no evidence that babies settle better or sleep longer when fed this type of formula.
