Description

I see why this is considered a classic, but the racial slurs/stereotypes are a big YIKES. You've even got yourself an Indian woman who is only saved from "savage natives" who are going to sacrifice her because she is kinda British in appearance and speech.

La Tierra es más pequeña, puesto que puede ser recorrida diez veces más rápido que hace cien años." Passepartout suits me,” responded Mr. Fogg. “You are well recommended to me; I hear a good report of you. You know my conditions?” Phileas Fogg, the lead character in Jules Verne’s adventure, was an Englishman of meticulous habits. The well-regulated Fogg kept to the same schedule. His habits were unchanging and he was never late. Apart from his daily hand of whist, he played his cards close to his chest. Fogg’s fellow members of the Reform Club had no inkling how he made his fortune or how he passed his time. There was conjecture among the Reform Club members that Fogg had traveled far and wide because no one was more familiar with the world than he. But perhaps Fogg was only an armchair traveler; apart from his daily sojourns to the Reform Club, he seemed not to travel beyond the front door of his own house.Novels of French writer Jules Gabriel Verne, considered the founder of modern science fiction, include Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Some people will tell you this book is not an adventure, and is in fact boring. But that's not true.

A rap at this moment sounded on the door of the cosy apartment where Phileas Fogg was seated, and James Forster, the dismissed servant, appeared. Verne’s characters employ steamships, trains, and sail-powered sleds to get from location to location. But no balloons. None. I read this book last week trying to catch up with my classics unread pile. And I am genuinely surprised with how much this book entertained me. I just cannot get enough of this book! Aouda is a beautiful Parsee rescued from being set ablaze in a ritualistic sacrifice. When her intended delivery to a relative in China falls flat, she invariably joins the race for the world journey. Her gratitude and admiration toward Fogg grow and develop into much more.Similar descriptions applied to Punjabis, Chinese, and Native Americans are littered throughout the book. It's also clear that, at the time of writing the novel, Verne was an unabashed Anglophile. Not only is the book a celebration of the British empire at its peak, but Verne is constantly praising Fogg's alleged English qualities (honor, stoicism, courage) and jabbing at his servent Passepartout's Frenchness (temperamental, impetuous, chatty). Another early reference comes from the Italian traveler Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri. He wrote a book in 1699 that was translated into French: Voyage around the World or Voyage du Tour du Monde (1719, Paris). [16]
