Description

She was born in Lodz in 1896 and spent her early years in relatively peace—marrying, studying for her midwife’s certificate, having children.

Describing the conditions in the barracks, Leszczyńska, wrote in A Midwife’s Report from Auschwitz in 1957: “The vast numbers of worms of all kinds exploited their biological supremacy over the dwindling vitality of the humans.Overall, this book is heartbreaking but lacked the proper writing to really have this book sink in for me.

When World War II broke out, the Leszczyński family was actively involved in the underground in Łódź. During the baby years I wrote in the brief gaps provided by sleeps, playschools and obliging grandparents, publishing short stories and serials in all the women’s magazines. All the lights in the village blur into the darkness, and the flame on my candle flickers, leaving us with just the glow of the stars. Ana’s home has been designated as falling within the Jewish ghetto, so she, her husband and three young adult sons are forced to move across town, whilst Ester, Filip and both their extended families find themselves sharing and squashed into a tiny house, inside the newly cordoned off ghetto, where they are kept living on the point of starvation, although with both of them plying trades of value to the occupiers, they are permitted to continue working, when many others can’t. She is happy in her marriage and has three strapping sons who are all forging their paths in the world. Por otro lado tenemos a Ester, enfermera y judía, conoceremos su historia de amor en tiempo donde los nazis aún estaban por llegar y viviremos como ella y su familia es apartada y llevada a los guetos judíos.

Ester was a young nurse, who is Jewish, living and working in Lodz in Poland when she and her new husband Filip Pasternak along with their families were rounded up and rehoused in the new ghetto as the Germans overtook their town.

As they reach the front of the line, Ana steps forward and quietly declares herself a midwife – and Ester her assistant. I do appreciate the opportunity that NetGalley and Bookoture gave me to read this book for my honest review.

However, now I find that more and more I think centering the voices of the survivors is more important than these fictionalized accounts. Written by Maria Stachurska - the mother-in-law of footy ace Robert Lewandowski - director Mariusz Malec, and journalist and author Dagmara Leszkowicz, the film is based on the real life story of Stanisława Leszczyńska whose actions helped save newborns from immediate extermination. After entering the photo into the prestigious Nikon Small World photography competition, she won third place, becoming the first Polish person to finish so highly in over 30 years.
