So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. Live at the LA Troubadour (live album featuring Sandy Denny issued on the Rising For the Moon Deluxe Edition) early albums, there are good choices in terms of song selection, but the band was still finding its way

The second CD covers the later years, after Denny left. Again, all of the band's albums are covered, The album was recorded during an early reunion festival, held at Broughton Castle in August 1981, before that event finally settled in its current Cropredy venue. [2] It features a reunion appearance by Richard Thompson and the first public performance in some years by Judy Dyble. The presentation is faultless throughout. The digital remastering is crystal clear and the accompanying booklet contains a wealth of information. Warspite from Atlanta, Ga., UsaThe whole association with death thing is unusual. Unusual in the sense that as a 17 yr old RT never consciously meant the association. Nor do I see how the concept would pop up subconsciously in the mind of some teenager. This is, however, RT we are talking about.Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. listener feels compelled to buy all the excellent Fairport albums, I can't imagine a better compilation for The Devil In The Kitchen"/"Possibly Parsons Green" – January 1974 (Island: Australia / New Zealand only) The song was taken from the album What We Did on Our Holidays. The band had performed the song on the 1969 launch of From the Roundhouse, a short-lived BBC television youth and arts programme about the London "underground scene". [1] The vocals were performed by Sandy Denny and Iain Matthews. Following the departure of Judy Dyble, the band conducted auditions for a replacement singer, and Sandy Denny became the obvious choice. Simon Nicol has said "it was a one horse race really... she stood out like a clean glass in a sink full of dirty dishes". [3] According to author Richie Unterberger Denny's "haunting, ethereal vocals gave Fairport a big boost". [1]

Deusner, Stephen (2 May 2008). "Fairport Convention: What We Did on Our Holidays". Pitchfork . Retrieved 30 August 2022. This double CD collection is effectively an updating of the superb "History of Fairport Convention" released on LP by Island records. The compilation covers Fairport's creative years from 1967 to 1975, thus capturing songs from all the albums from the eponymous debut through to "Rising for the moon". This of course means that the classics such as "Liege and Lief" and "Angel Delight" contribute some of their finery. The song's title came from a large, low-hanging tree limb on which Richard Thompson used to play as a child, and which he and his friends had dubbed "The Ledge". [2] Reception [ edit ] Recorded at Sound Techniques, London and Olympic Studio No. 1, London (except "The Lord Is in This Place..." recorded at St. Peter's Church, Westbourne Grove, West London). Further work recorded at Morgan Studios, London This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. David from Nottingham, United KingdomI want this song playing at my funeral. It is very special to those of us that have watched FC for many years and go to the Cropredy festival.
