Meanwhile, more than half a million dog owners admit to routinely leaving poo unbagged – while another quarter of a million say they often bag it but then hang it off a tree or put it under a bush rather than binning it, according to another recent report from Keep Britain Tidy, with research from YouGov. In total, this failure to properly dispose of dog poo leads to an estimated 53 tonnes of excrement a day being left on the ground or in bags in UK parks alone – enough to fill four refuse lorries, according to that report, which surveyed 1,225 adult dog owners across the UK. Poor training can cause all sorts of problems, including a greater tendency for owners to let dogs off their leads and for them to hare about more when they do – increasing the potential for those dogs to make their deposits far away where the owner can’t see them.

Typically, training should start as early as possible, once puppies have completed their vaccinations (usually around 12-14 weeks old), but owners can start basic training at home. So what happens to compostable or biodegradable plastic in landfill? We were horrified to learn that not only would they potentially take years (possibly centuries) to breakdown in landfill, they would also produce methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. When we spoke with Dr Carly Fletcher, a Bioplastics researcher from Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Fletcher advised the difference between plastic and compostable/biodegradable plastic in incineration was likely negligible. However we found one study showing PBAT (the main ingredient in compostable and biodegradable poo bags) releases significantly more carcinogens than standard plastic when incinerated. So what are the options, considering the above? Lizzie Carr, founder of Planet Patrol, the waste data and collection charity, said: “As a paddle boarder I have come across countless dog poo bags carelessly thrown into bushes, lurking on the edges of riverbanks, hung on fences or simply left on the ground.” There’s not a one-size-fits-all for training, and a dog’s needs will vary depending on a number of factors.

Conclusion

When it comes to shrinking your dog’s carbon paw print, keep in mind that not all products with a green label are alike. Some dog poop bags are made of “oxo-biodegradable” plastic, which means they’ve been treated with metal salts to help speed up their breakdown in landfills. A step up from conventional plastic, oxo-biodegradable bags turn into small fragments, or “micro-plastics” which will unfortunately remain in the environment.

Part of this new life involved getting a dog for a family pet. As pet owners yourself you will know that along with all the good things a dog can bring to a family they also bring a lot of crap (and I mean that literally). More than half of local authorities reported “an increase in both unbagged dog poo left on the ground and bagged dog poo, for example left hanging from railings or trees” since the start of 2021, in a recent survey by Keep Britain Tidy.

It’s no wonder dog fouling is such a problem – there are estimated to be more than 8 million dogs producing more than 1,000 tonnes of mess every day in the UK alone. We haven’t finished crunching the litter data for this year but I would say anecdotally, from what we’re witnessing, it looks like it’s getting worse,” she said. I realised this wasn’t a problem only I suffered, when one day sitting in car after walking my dog I saw 4 other people go through the almost identical ritual I had done 1 hour earlier.

If someone does fail to clean up after their pet, it falls to the council to get rid of it. More than 90% of councils have dog wardens. One of the concerning things that we’re seeing – along with the apparent increase in dog fouling – is a secondary form of littering in the form of discarded poo bags. Increasingly it seems people are just dumping those, hanging them on trees or leaving them on walls assuming that they’ve done their public duty,” added Dr Newburn, professor of criminology and social policy at the London School of Economics. Why recycled plastic? The manufacture of recycled plastic requires less energy and produces fewer carbon emissions compared to compostable plastic. It also reduces the amount of plastic ending up in the open environment, landfill or incineration by capturing and re-using it. Keep Britain Tidy has campaigned very successfully on the issue of dog fouling. In 2010, our high-profile ‘There’s no such thing as the dog poo fairy’ led to massive reductions in dog fouling in participating council areas. Some communities saw a decrease of up to 90%, while on average a reduction of 43% was recorded across the 94 participating local authorities. In towns and in some areas of the countryside along trails that are often used by dog owners, there are bins which are there specifically for any bagged dog poo to be put in. If possible, using biodegradable bags to scoop up your dog's business, all the better because using them is far better for the environment. Reusable poo bags - Yes they are a thing! However, these are best for people who can take their dog's poop home to compost it.

First, there’s a much higher concentration of dogs than wild animals in the U.S. With over 48 million dogs nationwide, each making one-to-three deposits per day, that’s a lot of poop. Whether you live in a population-dense city or a small town, unbagged dog poop is a major source of water pollution. Every time it rains or snows, abandoned dog poop is washed into the storm drains, contaminating local waterways. So let's say you don't or can't compost your dog's poo at home and like everyone else in the UK, your local council doesn't collect dog poo for industrial composting... Why oyster shells? Oysters are widely considered a sustainable and highly nutritious food source. They are fast growing and clean the water of pollution. Oyster farming provides livelihoods for local communities and men and women of all ages. Unlike the farming of food crops, it does not require the clearing of forest and land, intense water use, pesticides, fertilisers or GMOs.
