Tottenham now had the advantage but couldn’t find a way to goal. Jones had a first half ‘goal’ incorrectly disallowed for offside but it wasn’t until twenty minutes from time that they eventually went ahead. Allen and Dyson set up Smith who turned and shot past Gordon Banks. Seven minutes later, White dispossessed Chalmers and passed to Smith who crossed to the far post where Dyson headed home to secure Tottenham’s ‘Double’ triumph. Always wanting to get into sport Dyson senior is now part of Dyson Racing - a mini-syndicate also including his wife Kay, sons Neil and Barry and a friend of the latter.

Jimmy: "Just to show you how good they actually were, we also had Mel Hopkins in the squad, who was a Welsh international. Mel got injured and once Ron came in and took his place, he didn’t let go. We had talent all over the pitch. Big Maurice Norman was very strong in central defence. Cliff Jones was a brilliant winger, he had a good eye for a cross and was a great header of the ball. In midfield, John White floated around the middle of the park - you could always find him if you were looking to make a pass. And then there was Bobby Smith. Sometimes we had a telepathic partnership up front. He was tough, too. He used to rough up the goalkeeper at corners and crosses, something you’d never get away with today."

Jimmy: "Well it was the worst game of football I’ve ever played in. I felt terrible afterwards, and so did Bill. Winning the European Cup was Bill’s goal. It was his dream and his desire and sadly it never happened for him. Benfica were a good side, though, they weren’t mugs. They were the holders of the trophy and in the final that year they beat Real Madrid, who were admittedly a little bit over the hill – I think we would have beaten them, too." The first few fixtures may not have been played as the scheduled end of season tour to South Africa was replaced by a six-week trip to Canada. Our party did not return home until June 27.

appearances/19 goals for Spurs, 1955-65, one of 11 players to make 400-plus appearances for the ClubThe signing event takes place at Waterstones, Enfield on Saturday 28 th December 2015, from 11am to 1.00pm. The latter ended with 266 goals for Tottenham and still remains the club's all-time leading goalscorer, but Kane has that figure in his sights. Messrs. Knowles, Pratt, Chivers and Beal had all featured four years earlier in a similar event at Highgate. Cyril again led the batting with 57 out of a total of 131. Others on duty that afternoon included Baily, Mike England, Terry Venables, Dennis Bond and David Jenkins. Later in his career Dyson played for Fulham and Colchester, then managed in non-League and coached in local schools. Spurs fans of all vintages will revel in this account of a man who was part of a team contemporaries called the finest of all time yet who remains humble. Now a sprightly 80 the stories he is able to tell allow Terry Dysonto step into the limelight. Maurice started 48 of 49 matches as we won the First Division and FA Cup in 1960/61. Under the guidance of Bill Nicholson, we retained the FA Cup in 1962 and then made history, the first British team to lift a European trophy when we claimed the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. He also won 23 England caps and was part of the 1958 and 1962 World Cup squads in Sweden and Chile, alongside the likes of all-time greats Bobby Moore, Tom Finney, Billy Wright, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Charlton and his Spurs team-mates, Bobby Smith and Jimmy Greaves.

The final against Atletico Madrid was, quite simply, the game of his life. In that memorable 5-1 demolition, he created the second goal John White, scored the third, set up the fourth for Jimmy Greaves before capping the night with a 25-yarder.In the '61 Cup final I missed a sitter when I nodded over the bar from six yards when it was nil-nil," says Terry, 66 and still pained by a memory perfectly captured by ace photographer of the day, Monte Fresco.

Jimmy: "It was under the floodlights, we’d play in the all-white kit and the crowds were fantastic. It was electrifying. Football was never a drab game from a spectator’s point of view, but if you look at some of the old photos from those days, you’ll see the crowds and they’re all in their overcoats and caps. Some of them might have a team scarf on, or a coloured rattle, but nobody really dressed up. There were no replica shirts and there was no colour. Despite that, the atmosphere was fantastic. Today you get all the fans wearing the shirts and I think of White Hart Lane during those European years, it started the whole thing off. We had the ‘Spurs Angels’ and everybody started to dress up. It was something totally new. Those games were electrifying to play in." Villa Park was not Spurs’ favourite ground for FA Cup semi-finals, having lost the last three they had played there in 1948, 1953 and 1956. At the fourth attempt, it was the ‘Double’ team elect that was to lay the ghost of Villa Park. In 1961 they bought Jimmy Greaves. Les Allen knew it would be him that would have to make way. Greaves could only add to any team for who he played. Now in 2015 he is suffering from ill health so to remind everyone of his genius here is a clip from Spurs vs Manchester United on 16 October 1965. Jimmy: "They were a great team, but in so many different ways. Every lifetime produces a great football team, but you don’t necessarily get a great bunch of personalities at the same time. In that team, everybody could play and everybody got on. The mixture was spot on, there was a great companionship and the football was incredible. We had the will to stand by each other and see each other through - not only on the football field, but anywhere. The first two or three years of my Spurs career were fabulous." This book is a must for all Spurs fans and the perfect birthday or Christmas gift for a dedicated supporter you may know. This article (first published in 2000)discusses the various members of the squad that made up the Spurs 1960-61 squad. Latest edit - 2016 It was announced today 19 September 2021 that sadly Jimmy passed away. The above clip is a reminder for all time what a goal scoring genius he was; one that will never grace a Spurs team again.
