Description

The Tulip Touch won the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year Award; Goggle-Eyes won the Guardian Children's Fiction Award and the Carnegie Medal; Flour Babies won the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year; and Bill's New Frock won a Smarties Prize. On Monday Tuffy brings home a dead bird and his family are horrified but Tuffy doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. Another writing task that could be initiated in using this book, could be one that involves writing in a different form.

Tuffy's human is Ellie; Ellie and her family are horrified by the things their cat kills and brings back home. When he brings home the body of the neighbours rabbit the family go to great lengths to cover up his crime. Can soft-hearted Ellie manage to get her beloved pet to change his wild, wild ways before he ends up in even deeper trouble? This was one of my favourite books when I was younger and re-reading it several years later it is so clear why! The illustrations in this book can also be used in which to inspire creative writing (writing in a different form again).

If you like this book, here are some other books you might enjoy - including the further adventures of Tuffy the Killer Cat. Necessary cookies enable core functionality such as security, network management, and accessibility. The book gives a great account of this as it demonstrates how different the cat’s thoughts are on the situation from the typical ‘human opinion’ which I feel children would find amusing. The comicality, repetition, and use of short simple sentences make this a good book for both independent and guided reading. are all questions can be posed in the lesson to help children think about the different forms a diary can take in itself. During the Christmas break I read this book with my 7 year old cousin who just absolutley loved the story. a sheet of individual pupil questions that they glue into their Reading Response journals after reading a chapter with the teacher (again not entirely mine as I found some questions here and there).
