Iggle Piggle is now making his way through the world all the way to the stage: the In the Night Garden Live show opened in Liverpool last month and has just arrived in London, before heading for Glasgow and Birmingham. "For a long time, I didn't want to do a stage show," says Davenport. "It's difficult to create something that works for a theatre audience in the way that a TV show works for one. And conventional theatres are simply not designed for two-year-olds, with those seats they can't see over." Another says Davenport created Iggle Piggle to look like former British prime minister David Cameron and it helped him win the general election in 2010. Without a second thought, the man led the boy on an old wooden boat. By this time the boy was drifting, opening his eyes in confusion but too tired and cold to retaliate. The man pushed the boat to the shore and began wading out into the sea. The tide was strong and as he went for one last push he dropped his torch into the boat before his son began to drift out to the horizon, leaving him to the fate of the ocean. His parents had finally abandoned him in the cruelest way imaginable. Brown, Jonathan; Robinson, Josie (18 April 2007). "In the Night Garden: Bedtime for Teletubbies". The Independent. Sound crazy? You’d be right, but children the world over can’t get enough of the characters and the technicolour world they inhabit.Jersey, States of. "Government of Jersey". gov.je. But there is one show that I have since delved into, and looked behind the innocence of, a bedtime show that readies children for slumber. Lane, Harriet (25 November 2007). "Night Fever". The Observer Magazine. Archived from the original on 5 December 2009 . Retrieved 11 January 2010. Davenport says the opening scene where Iggle Piggle is out at sea in a little boat (”Take the little sail down/Light the little light/This is the way to the garden in the night”) is a metaphor for sleep. Bedtime really commands a child's entire day. Very often children don't have a proper sense of time. They live with the idea that, at any moment, someone could just take them from what they are doing and send them to bed. It can be a difficult moment: being suddenly alone. So In the Night Garden makes a metaphorical explanation for sleep, which is one of the only things in a child's life it can't be accompanied on. That's why you have the image of Iggle Piggle alone on a boat at the start, floating on a dark swelling ocean that's a metaphor for sleep."

In 1999 the attraction underwent its first retheme to become Riverbank Eye Spy as part of Old MacDonald's magical farmyard. The ride took passengers on a leisurely trip around a number of 2D sets featuring a whole host of farmyard animals, with the on ride audio asking them to identify the animals as they passed by pressing a button. This button then played the matching sound, enhancing the interactive feel of the ride. Andrew Davenport, who also created Teletubbies, the world’s second most annoying children’s television show, was 43 when he dreamed up In the Night Garden, condemning millions of parents to a fate worse than being run over by the Ninky Nonk while probably never having to sit through an episode (other than for work) himself. A different company, Golden Bear Toys have also made a range of In The Night Garden... toys, featuring Upsy Daisy and Igglepiggle. These include the "Musical Ninky Nonk Bubble Train" and the "Igglepiggle Wind-up Musical Boat." [15] One parent petitioner was quoted by The Daily Telegraph commenting: "My four-year-old refused to believe it was bedtime because In the Night Garden... hadn't been on and it was daylight outside.", this is because the show was removed from CBeebies' Bedtime Hour for a while in 2008. [10] Telecast and home media [ edit ] But all those theories are, again, the work of grown ups. And subliminal readings of 14th century poetry aside, it still doesn’t explain what on earth In the Night Garden is all about and why children love it so God damn much. I think it is fair to say she speaks for every single parent on the face of the Earth. It’s also worth noting Night Garden creator Davenport has studied speech development and the play language he created highlights the sounds and word-parts typical of a toddler’s first attempts at talking).

And there was me thinking it was just a bunch of toys running about saying hello to each other. Davenport has, however, forgotten the other crucial thing about Iggle Piggle: he looks very like David Cameron. "Yeah," he laughs. "People have said that. But David Cameron wasn't on my mind at any point during the devising of Iggle Piggle." Does he think it might have helped Cameron's election success? "It might have made a contribution," he says, laughing again. "Who knows?"
