My thanks to Quercus Books for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. He also hopes to reconcile with his estranged daughter and explain a misunderstanding that has caused her hatred. A dying detective travels to a northern outpost to investigate the death of a man found in the snow. Thanks to the ruined landscape and extreme weather, the atmosphere is oppressive, as Brodie considers the handful of likely suspects and their potential motivations. Cameron Brodie, a Glasgow detective, sets out on a hazardous journey to the isolated and ice-bound village.

Against this backdrop, Addie checks the mountain top weather station she instals above Kinlochleven in the Highlands when she notices what appears to be an ice tunnel which has created a cathedral like arch. The trilogy has won several French literature awards, including one of the world's largest adjudicated readers awards, the Prix Cezam. Three months earlier, award-winning Scottish Herald investigative journalist, Charles Younger, the bane of corrupt politicians, went missing near Loch Leven. Set against a backdrop of a frighteningly plausible near-future, A WINTER GRAVE is Peter May at his page-turning, passionate and provocative best.Glasgow detective Cameron Brodie volunteers to fly out to investigate Younger’s death, but his ulterior motive is something else all together.

Hailstorms flew out of the darkness like sparks, deflecting off the windscreen… He could barely see the road ahead of him, hail blowing around and drifting like snow on the recently cleared tarmac. With comms and the internet still down, and the Ice storm having cut off the village, Brodie continues to investigate this puzzling murder. He has created, in granular detail, an entirely singular, plausible and fascinatingly new version of our own world. In other hands, all the detailed scientific information in the novel – not to mention the underlying political message – could have become heavy-handed.

The book opens in the near future, not a huge step forward in time but massive changes have occurred. In 2014 Entry Island won both the Scottish Crime Novel of the Year and a CWA Dagger as the ITV Crime Thriller Book Club Best Read of the Year. They help us to identify popular products and understand your browsing habits so we can display relevant adverts to you. In the dark and the cold, there are grim discoveries and mysterious goings-on, both up on the ridge and in the hotel’s cake fridge. Now Brodie is investigating a mysterious murder but soon he is going to have his hands full with another. He’s been given the devastating news that he has only months to live, but he needs to meet up with Addie, the meteorologist first, he has something really important to tell her before it’s too late - because Addie is his estranged daughter. Also I never ended up caring for any of the characters, which made the book's powerful moments less impactful. Alone up a mountain and you come across a body in ice is frightening and for Addie she needs to get off the mountain and get the police involved.
